IUE IS MOURNING, FESTIVAL IS CANCELLED
İzmir University of Economics Board of Trustees President Ekrem Demirtaş stated that they were grieving because of the murder of the student and announced that the 9th Spring Festival which was going to start tomorrow (April 28) was cancelled.
Ekrem Demirtaş, who made a speech in the commemorative ceremony organized by İzmir University of Economics Student Council, stated that the incident affected İzmir and even Turkey saying, “A young student became the victim of a murderer while turning back home after shopping. Life is very short. I can happen to anyone. It is a very terrible incident. We hope the murderer will be caught soon. We wish no one would experience anything like this. Due to this sorrow, we are cancelling our festival program."
The university personnel and students protested the incident in silence by wearing black clothes. The students went to the crime scene and put photographs and flowers to the place where Ayşe Selen Ayla was shot. Student Council President Ahmet Gökhan Altun stated that the incident affected not only the students but all the people in İzmir. Altun said, “Today, the students and personnel wore black clothes and protested the incident in silence."
Following the speeches, Ekrem Demirtaş, İzmir University of Economics Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen, Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Tunçdan Baltacıoğlu, İzmir University of Economics Board of Trustees members, academicians and all the personnel walked with the students and put flowers to the place where Ayşe Selen Ayla was killed. After walking, the students left the place quietly.
