Gender and Media Workshop Discussed Violence Against Women
The third Gender and Media Workshop organized collectively by the Directorate General on the Status of Women (KSGM), İzmir University of Economics Faculty of Communication and İzmir University of Economics Gender Studies Research Center (EKOKAM) continues.
40 students chosen from faculties of communication, KSGM specialists, IUE Faculty of Communication academicians, and guest speakers attended the Gender and Media Workshop. The various aspects of violence against women and the role of media in its reproduction are discussed. The students will develop a social campaign for raising awareness about violence against women and they will make films, radio sketches and announces, social advertisements, newspapers, photo interviews about it.
In the first day of the conference, KSGM Department Head Naci Yıldırım told the aim of the center and gave information about the studies done.
Dean of Faculty of Communication Prof. Dr. Sevda Alankuş made the opening speech of the conference stated that they had set the theme of the conference as “women, location, and violence”. Prof. Dr. Alankuş said, “We organized this workshop in memory of Ayşe Selen Ayla, our student who was murdered in April and other women like her. Our aim is to contribute to the struggle of the women who are exposed to psychological and any kind of violence not only at their homes but also on the streets for thousands of years.”
In the workshop, KSGM representatives Mehmet Erdoğan, Müge Toker and Melek Bütün made presentations on indicators of Equality and Inequality of Men Women, Gender equality and gender based discrimination and they evaluated the research results on the representation of violence against women in media.
