10th ACADEMIC YEAR OF IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
9th President of Republic, Süleyman Demirel attended the 10th academic year opening ceremony of İzmir University of Economics and presented important statesmen on the world’s and Turkey’s agenda.
9th President of Republic, Süleyman Demirel, İzmir University of Economics Chairman of the Board of Trustees Ekrem Demirtaş, İzmir University of Economics Rector Prof. Dr. Attila Sezgin, many invited guests, academicians and students attended the 10th academic year opening ceremony of İzmir University of Economics.
Prof. Dr. Sezgin made the opening speech of the ceremony and underlined the success achieved by İzmir University of Economics in 10 years. He said, "The University has become one of the top five foundation universities in Turkey with 91% occupancy rate. Our strong and confident attitude brought us to a prestigious place among the higher institutions in both our region and country. While beginning to its tenth academic year, we are proud of our superiority and acquis, however, we are also aware of the responsibility it brings. I believe that all of our academic and administrative personnel are aware of this.”
Ekrem Demirtaş stated that they set forth with little steps in 2001 and underlined that İzmir University of Economics had a great success with its 4 thousand and 316 graduates. Demirtaş said, "I feel very different today because it is our 10th year. 10 years full of successes. We had started our first academic year in 2001 with our 9th President of Republic. He had given the first lesson. We are very happy to have him here to open our academic year. None of our 4 thousand and 316 graduates, except very few one, have problems about finding a job. Their diplomas are valid not only in Turkey but also in EU. That is because we are among the 3 foundation universities that is entitled to receive “Diploma Supplement Label”. That means EU commission registered that we are giving education on EU level. We started to prepare our 10-year plans. This plan will be a strategic plan that will make difference in our education. We will continue our way without departing from our aim to be a world university.
Following the speeches of Rector Prof. Dr. Attila Sezgin and Ekrem Demirtaş, 9th President of Republic, Süleyman Demirel took the stage to give the “First Course” of 2010-2011 academic year.
9th President of Republic, Süleyman Demirel gave the first course of 2010-2011 academic year and gave important information. Süleyman Demirel expressed his happiness for what İzmir University of Economics achieved. He said, "I do not come here for just attending a meeting. I come here to relax. The steps that İzmir University of Economics takes to become a world university please us. I am proud. This relaxes me. Because there is nothing that you can replace with success."
Arrangements are inevitable in finance sector
9th President of Republic, Süleyman Demirel stated that globalization was inevitable saying, “No country can close its borders and avoid globalization. The world is very small now. Economics integrated with globalization. The world cannot abandon free economy and free trade anymore. Democracy, market economy and human rights will be the roof of the world. However, an arrangement in finance sector seems inevitable.”
A new agricultural policy is indispensable
President of Republic Demirel stated that Turkey had to take rational decisions in order to be rich. Süleyman Demirel said, "Turkey’s economics is sometimes in 15th place and sometimes in 22nd place among 192 countries. We have to increase production and make savings. Export has to increase too. 30% of the population deals with agriculture. In the United Stated, only 3% of the population deals with agriculture, but they are able to feed themselves. Out production is not enough for us, although 30% of the population deals with agriculture. We need to a new agricultural policy has to be created. We need to reach modernity by act together with the world. The reason of these efforts is to create a modern, civilized, and rich Turkey."
Following the speeches Prof. Dr. Attila Sezgin presented a 10th Academic Year plaquette to to the 9th President of Republic Süleyman Demirel. At the end of the ceremony, İzmir University of Economics Folk Dances Club and Music Club presented a show entitled Sparkles from the Turkish Culture Mosaic”. At the end of the show, Folk Dances Club President Engin Kıbrıslı presented the lute of Dede Korkut to Süleyman Demirel.
