IT'S DIFFICULT TO TRACE A WOMAN
İpek Çalışlar, the author of ‘Latife Hanım’ and ‘Halide Edip’ which have been on the top of the best sellers’ list for a long time, a journalist, was a guest at Izmir University of Economics and talked about the writing process of her books as well as about the role of a woman in Turkey.
Ipek çalışlar, who was invited to Izmir university of Economics by The Research Centre for Sex Problems in a Society and Women Issues (EKOKAM) talked in a discussion moderated by the Dean of Faculty of Communication, Prof Dr Sevda Alankuş about her observations that she had while she was writing these two books. Mrs Çalışlar underlined that it’s very difficult to find written information or information in the media about women even if they are very important personalities. She said that that’s why it’s very difficult to trace women it Turkey. She underlined further that she had to go through research for a very long time in the process of writing of her books and she had gathered information about Halide Edip for 3-4 months before she wrote it. Likewise, while she was writing ‘Latife Hanım’ she looked for traces of her past and her family. But, while it was possible to find ample sources about men, she could only come across very little information about these two women. ‘The men never wrote about women in that era. That’s why it’s very difficult to trace women in Turkey’ she added.
Ipek Çalışlar stated that she had been a journalist for many years and wanted to write a series of articles called ‘Latife Hanım’ which became a best seller afterwards and got a lot of reviews. She added that she was also surprised at the positive reaction she got due to this book. Before ‘Latife Hanım’ she had gathered information about Halide Edip, but Halide Edip was her second field of research. She said, she has great difficulty finding a third name. Mrs Çalışlar said further that she could come across a little information and some photos about these women. Although there’re a lot of people about whom one could write books, she doesn’t know if she can come up with a third book, because she can’t find sources.
