TENTH YEAR HONOR OF IUE
Being first economics university of Turkiye and first foundation university of Izmir and Aegean Region, Izmir University of Economics is getting ready to celebrate its 10th year establishment anniversary on 14 April.
Having started with 288 students in 2001 and having had 6.155 students in 6 faculties Izmir University of Economics President of the Board of Trustees Ekrem Demirtas gave an interview to Faculty of Communication students before 10th year celebration. President Demirtas hosted Eda Sahin and Nilay Aygun in his Office for the newspaper ‘’Univers’’. Having said that Izmir University of Economics is his best work on all occasions, the president Demirtas told challenging establishment process of Izmir University of Economics and answered the questions of the students. He also made significant explanations about future plans.
We are in an essential mid point
Having stated that the 10th year of the establishment is very important and a turning point for Izmir University of Economics, he said that they would determine the last point that Izmir University of Economics has reached with a workshop and questionnaire at the end of year.
Demirtas said ‘’ Great Journeys start with little steps, the famous universities around the world have 300-400 years in their past. We are just 10 years old. We were aware that we will have a challenging and long journey when we had decided this university. The mid points in this journey are very important. We are in a mid point now as a university. It is important where we are and where we should go. This year is very important for us. We will determine the last point with the help of workshop and questionnaire at the end of this academic year and we will prepare a new future plan which will move 2014 strategic plan forward.
Annual budget of the university is 50 million dollars
Having been established by Izmir Chamber of Commerce Education and Health Foundation with 3 million 150 thousand Dollars support in 2001, the annual budget of Izmir University of Economics has reached 50 million dollars today. Having stated that all this money is spent for education and students, the president Demirtas stated that all the investments are done for a better education and physical facilities. He also stated that the university is renewed and the technological equipment is increased every year and they spare no expense to make the facilities better. We wanted our students to complete their education with sitting on best chairs, using best facilities of the technology.
Güzelbahçe campus will be social and sports complex
Having stated that one of the biggest problems of the university is a campus, President Demirtas said that they will use land in Güzelbahçe as a social and sports complex. Ekrem Demirtaş, said that forestation procedure will be started in accordance with the reconstruction decision given by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. He said ‘’there is no place in Balçova Campus after Faculty of Fine Arts and Design building construction. Already we have an area calculated for 6.500 student capacity. So this area is limited for social facilities. We will use the land in Güzelbahçe without doing any construction in accordance with the decision of Izmir Municipality, we will create a social campus with tennis courts and basketball fields etc.
Number of Scholars will increase
Having drawn attention to having 800 scholars at Izmir University of Economics, president Demirtas stated that they will increase the number of full and half scholars. We will increase the number of scholars because the success rate is also as important as the quality of the education fo Izmir University of Economics. By increasing the number of scholars we will raise the level of the students. Because our students are the most important issue for us. It is one of the most important factors is the success of our students that puts the name of our university forward. We have a great honor as a result of the success of our students. We want our students to start their business life with a success. Having started to be a world university on this way, I wish our students will always be successful.
