Being the first Foundation University of Aegean Region and Izmir, Izmir University of Economics celebrated its 10th year with a great enthusiasm. Izmir University of Economics President of the Board of Trustees Ekrem Demirtas said ‘’the university is the making of a world university and next years the academic staff will be increased and teh quality of education will increase.’’
The awards of 7th International Students Conference participants were given in the 10th year ceremony. Also professors, associate and assistant professors put on their gowns. 5th and 10th year academic and administrative staff taken their certificates and ‘’I had a Dream’’ entitled oratorio by Alaskar Abbasov was presented.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu attended to opening ceremony and he stated that Izmir University of Economics is the leader of education. ‘’ If Izmir University of Economics had not been established maybe Izmir would not be on the way of being cities of universities. Izmir University of Economics has been the leader in education and I wish many success’’ he said. Having done the opening speech of ceremony Rector Prof. Dr. Atilla Sezgin drew attention to 10 years being an important point for the university.
Academic Staff will gain strength
The president Demirtas told the establishment story of the university and mentioned about starting point with 288 students and having 6.155 now. ‘’Last ten years have passed with strengthening the academic staff and technical equipment of the university. We faced with difficulties and we still do. We still could not achieve the real aim of the university, preparing ready to business employees. We will strengthen the academic staff and will achieve our aim from 2011 until.’’ He said.
We will make a Difference
The president said ’’the aim of Izmir University of Economics being a world university. When we look at the past actions we have done we can see our mistakes. But we this is just a start for us. Until now we presented our difference and we will continue to make difference we must do it. We must increase the quality of education. This is possible with qualified academic staff and also qualified students. So we are planning to increase number of scholars. We will accept students with more grades. ‘’

The president also stated ‘’The number of universities in Turkiye in 2001 was 72 and there are 139 now. Our aim is to make the university a world university as well as making Izmir a world city as Izmir Chamber of Commerce. We are always one of the best foundation universities to be chosen. The capacity of the university is %85 full. But this is not enough for us. Izmir’s being a world city the university will be a power. We will open the doors more to Izmir and the world we will listen to the sound of Turkiye and we will give out a sound.’’
We created a modern university
Prof. Dr. Atilla Sezgin also drew attention to Izmir University of Economics’ being one of the most popular among foundation universities. He said ‘’quantitive changes of course cannot mention the success of university alone. For this reason the most important today is to focus on modern steps of the university and academic success for ten years. Izmir University of Economics has become a local and international famous known university in such a short time for university like 10 years. This is the result of an academic success of the university.’’
After the presentation of ‘’I Had a Dream’’ entitled oratorio, the cocktail continued.
