Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Communication, Department of Public Relations and Advertising senior students received the first course on EXPO 2020 Candidacy Campaign project by Ekrem Demirtaş, President of the Board of Trustees and Izmir Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Executive Board.
Department of Public Relations and Advertising students, who conceptualized the EXPO 2020 as a project for their “Campaign Design in Integrated Marketing Communication” course, got detailed information from President Demirtaş about EXPO process at a meeting held at Izmir Chamber of Commerce. Approximately 60 students from Department of Public Relations and Advertising listened to all the details about the history and candidacy process of EXPO from President Demirtaş. President Demirtaş expressed that 5 cities will compete and 157 country representatives will vote for EXPO 2020. He said that EXPO 2020 competition will be harder.
President Demirtaş expressed that the method of voting had an important effect on losing EXPO 2015 candidacy to Milan and said that the ballots should be counted by using ballot boxes in EXPO 2020 elections. President Demirtaş, who reminded us about the big crisis of European economy, said that, “I don’t believe EXPO 2015 organization will be reliable in Europe while it is struggling with a big crisis, if Milan states that it won’t be able to organize EXPO 2015, Izmir is equipped with the necessary economic strength and funds to organize it.”
President Demirtaş indicated that African votes have significant effect in the election, he said that, “There are 12 countries in South America, but it is impossible to get votes from them. The commercial relations with China and Korea might be in favour for us. Turkish schools in the mentioned countries will also have a say in the matter. Also, the number of ambassadors doubled in various countries. There are 57 member countries in Islamic Development Organization. They didn’t have any impact on last election, but that may change. Small countries of Africa act chaotic during voting process. We must put ballot boxes and count the ballots this year”.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Ebru Uzunoğlu, Head of Department Public Relations and Advertising and Faculty Member Burak Amirak and Research Associate Serçin Sun thanked President Ekrem Demirtaş at the end of the meeting and they stated that they would share the projects.
