A SEMINAR BY AWARD-WINNING DESIGNER SEGALINI
A lecture and workshop series called ISType (istype.com) was held for the first time last September in Istanbul by Izmir University of Economics faculty member Alessandro Segalini and Sabancı University faculty member Onur Yazıcıgil in order to encourage typographic literacy in Turkey.
The seminars and workshops focused on structural approaches regarding typographic education and theory. History of type and calligraphy and the effects of technology on graphic design and typography were among the discussion subjects of the seminars. The workshop, run by Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Visual Communication Design faculty member Alessandro Segalini, attracted great attention. The workshop was centred on the design skills, craftsmanship and techniques that lie behind the process and production of type design.
Expert designers carried out applied workshop activities with the participants at the seminars which took place at Karaköy Communication Centre and lasted 4 days. The typeface Hemingway designed by Alessandro Segalini has been selected for the UK Creative Review Type Annual 2011 within the Display category. The typeface Duru Sans designed by Onur Yazıcıgil is going to be published among the Google Web fonts, and it was the identity typeface of the whole ISType event, together with the main logo, designed by Segalini. The second ISType conference is schedule for mid-June 2012.
