STUDENTS EXHIBITED THEIR MULTI - LANGUAGE SKILLS
Izmir University of Economics, School of Foreign Languages have been teaching German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, and Chinese to 5 high schools in Balçova in order to endear foreign language and raise awareness among students. The exhibition consisting semester studies of these students opened to public in the main lounge.
Balçova Project Coordinator Asst. Prof. Dr. Sevinç Mesbah has stated that they’ve been providing language training through this project which started in spring semester of 2010- 2011 academic year within the scope of School of Foreign Languages. She’s said that, “We’re on the second semester of our training. We provide German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, and Chinese training to 5 high schools in addition to English. Our purpose is to raise awareness about importance of learning a second language besides English and to endear learning foreign language. We’ve observed that high school students’ self-confidence has increased and they’ve displayed positive behaviour due to being in a university environment. Therefore, our project has been psychologically, pedagogically, and socially beneficial to high school students.”
The high schools that receive second foreign language training at IUE within the project are; Nevvar Salih İşgören High School, Ahmet Hakkı Balcıoğlu Trade Vocational High School, Sacide Ayaz High School, Salih Dede High School, and Balçova Anatolian High School. The exhibition, in which the students were dressed in local apparel of the countries’ language they receive training about, has drawn lots of attention.
