12 OUT OF 100 WOMEN ARE SUBJECT TO VIOLENCE
International Gender/Violence conference organized by Izmir University of Economics, Gender and Women Studies Research and Application Centre (EKOKAM) is in progress with sessions. The three day long conferences, which aim to raise awareness about gender and improve international researches, brought the leading activists in Turkey and worldwide together.
Izmir University of Economics Acting Rector Prof. Dr. Tunçdan Baltacıoğlu, who presented the opening speech, stressed the importance of the conference. Prof. Dr. Baltacıoğlu said, “We need to analyze violence not only physical but in many aspects.
We can find violence even in the words of a politician”.
12 out of 100 women are subject to violence
The key speaker of the conference Prof. Dr. Evan Stark of Rutgers University (America) indicated that the violence women are subject to is not made public, and made stunning remarks about Turkey. He said that every 12 out of 100 women in Turkey are subject to violence but only one of them is talking about this. Prof. Dr. Stark said, “The women are not unveiling the violence against them when they experience it for the first time. They are able to talk about it after three or four times. They file a complaint against violence but even the police believe the women exaggerate it. In other words, they take not the violence itself but the extent of violence seriously”.
1 million people are in custody in America but none of them are under arrest
Prof. Dr. Evan Stark pointed out the importance of “domestic violence” in his speech where he said that he felt uncomfortable with the term “domestic violence”. He said, “1 million people have been taken into custody in “End Violence” project in America but not a single person has been arrested because the courts described the violence as ‘domestic violence’ ”.
Prof. Dr. Stark, who pointed out that the domestic violence was a “power play”, said, “This situation enables the men, who has control over at home, to have more power in social life thus causing domestic violence to become a secondary importance. The need for men to dominate over women is a pathological situation. Therefore, we cannot call violence as “domestic violence”.
