FROM KINDER GARDEN TO UNIVERSITY, SIGNATURE OF IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
Izmir University of Economics, bearing the title of the first Foundation University of the Aegean Region, celebrated its 11th anniversary of establishment with a majestic ceremony. Ekrem Demirtaş, IUE President of the Board of the Trustees, announced the good news that they would open kinder gardens, elementary and high schools and said that by 2023 they would be raising the most educated youth of the world.
President Ekrem Demirtaş, co-hosting the ceremony with Izmir University of Economics Rector Prof. Dr. Tunçdan Baltacıoğlu, indicated that they would be establishing an education network, initially kinder gardens, spreading out to all over Aegean Region, even to all of Turkey in 2012-2013 academic year. The University rectors, IUE previous term rector and Honorary Member of the Board of the Trustees Prof. Dr. Atilla Sezgin, dignitaries, academicians and students attended the ceremony of the 11th Anniversary of Establishment held at the Conference Hall.
13 new departments
President Demirtaş stated that they started out with a big ambition in 2001 and continued with their goal of becoming a world university. He pointed out that the university brought in 100 million dollars every year to Izmir economy. President Demirtaş indicated that a success story was written in 11 years, and he said, “Following us, Istanbul, TOBB and Konya Chambers of Commerce established universities. We are aiming for bigger now. We applied to YOK (Higher Education Council) for 13 new departments, which we identified based on the needs. We found out that they were approved. We are beginning to accept students to Faculty of Law this year. We are going to train lawyers who are specialized in business law. We also initiated the Faculty of Agricultural Technology and Food Sciences. We are going to accept students for Food Processing Engineering which is very important for Aegean Region. We are going to accept students for Accounting and Auditing Department as well as Business Administration, where students will be trained according to the new Turkish Trade Act.”
Priority to Vocational Education and Training
President Demirtaş indicated that vocational training was among the new goals for this year. He continued to say, “Vocational training, which prepares the young people to life in a short period of time and later provides them with the opportunity to continue their education, is our new goal for this year. 90% of our vocational training departments have been filled in 2011 – 2012 academic year. As business world, we unfortunately cannot find qualified personnel ready to work. I, as a Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, know this fact very well. Therefore, we are opening 10 more new programs. These are; Justice, Foreign Trade, Web Design, Multi-Media Management, Child Development, Alternative and Renewable Energy Technologies, Radio-TV Programming, Applied English and Translation, Retail Trade, and Store Management. We are going to train the young people that the business world is desperately seeking for in these departments”.
Science and Technology Park project is ready
President Demirtaş said that the Science and Technology Park Project was prepared under the leadership of Izmir University of Economics and Izmir Chamber of Commerce and an application was made. He said, “ We envision Izmir Science and Technology Park to become a techno park which specializes in especially Sustainable Energy, Sustainable Agriculture and Informatics as well as agriculture technologies, seed improvement, advanced food technologies, sustainable energy technologies (geothermal energy, wind energy, solar energy, wave energy, bio fuel technologies). Izmir Science and Technology Park will be established under the leadership of our university and with the support of Izmir Chamber of Commerce, Izmir Organized Industrial Zone (ITOB), Organized Industrial Zone (OSB), Izmir Commodity Exchange, and private companies”.

President Ekrem Demirtaş announced in his speech that they would be opening kinder garden, elementary and high schools under the name of Izmir Economics and he said by 2023 they would be raising the most educated youth of the world who could speak 2-3 languages. He pointed out that Izmir University of Economics moved forward successfully with the goal of becoming a world university. He said, “We said it last year for the first time. Our goal is to become a “world university”. Therefore, we are going to open kinder garden, elementary, middle, and high schools of Izmir Economics. We are going to spread this education model out to all over Aegean Region, even to all of Turkey. Then we will be able to close down Preparatory School and be able to provide genuine foreign languages education. By 2023, we will have well educated youth who can speak 2-3 languages”.
We are following the path of wisdom and science
Izmir University of Economics Rector Prof. Dr. Tunçdan Baltacıoğlu, who also presented a speech at the ceremony, said that the most significant purpose of the university was to train students who were not set back by dogmas or reckoned by any institutions, individuals or groups. He said, “We, as Izmir University of Economics, would like to train youth who is aware of the fact that anything can change anytime; who, instead of keeping silent, can express themselves within the boundaries of basic rights and freedoms; who can defend the freedom of right for the people they disagree with; who have self-confidence and believe they can change the world. While doing all this, we are inspired by principles and revolutions of Ataturk, and follow the path of wisdom and science”.
After the speeches, the students who achieved success at national and international competitions in 2011-2012 academic year received their plaques and faculty members, who got promoted to professorship, associate and assistant professorship, received their academic gowns. At the end of the ceremony, the audience watched the performance “Son Kahvaltı (The Last Breakfast)”, which required a labour of 63 students
