VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGN FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED
One of the projects of the second year students of the Department of Visual Communication Design at Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, was about making a museum exhibition or collection within Izmir (Toy Museum, Art and Archeology Museum, Arkas Art Gallery, Mask Museum etc.) accessible to the special audience of visually impaired people. In that respect, students designed, tested and produced tactile (raised) graphics for 3 objects representative of the exhibition/collection, the tactile map of the exhibition or gallery space, and a promotional material.
The project was completed in 4 weeks and a special jury composed of six students and one teacher, Metin Cerit, from Aşık Veysel Primary School for the Visually Impaired were invited to assess the works, on Friday the 3rd of May. The jury which was held in the form of a workshop, was very productive in reminding our students the importance and difficulty of designing for the visually impaired people. In that respect our department is thanking again, to all the students and teachers of Aşık Veysel Primary School for the Visually Impaired.
