THE UN WILL BRING ENERGY TO IZMIR
The second of the Energy Management and Policies Workshops organized by Izmir University of Economics this year is getting ready to bring world’s leading names of the energy sector together. The workshop, co-organized by Global Compact Turkey, to which IUE became a party as of November 2012, will begin with the opening speeches of Brice Lalonde, UN Assistant Secretary General and UN Global Compact Office Senior Adviser, and Kamal Malhotra, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative.
2nd Energy Management and Policies Workshop that will take place on Thursday May 30, will also host the launching assembly titled, “Sustainable Energy For Everyone: Opportunities for Business World” on the same day. Lead applications for various sectors of business world, in terms of sustainable energy, will be discussed, and primary action plans will be presented as part of the organization.
Prof. Dr. Tunçdan Baltacıoğlu, IUE Rector, stressed the importance of international workshop that will take place during EXPO 2020 process. The Rector stated that the workshop, which will host two top officials of United Nations, was crucial not only to Izmir, but to Turkey as well. Baltacıoğlu said, “We are very honoured to host Brice Lalonde, the former French Minister of Environment, and Executive Coordinator of Rio+20, where Turkey also actively took place during international negotiations, and Kamal Malhotra, UN Resident Coordinator, at our university. I believe that such international organizations taking place at Izmir during EXPO 2020 process have a significant effect to Izmir’s candidacy to EXPO. We’ll be very pleased to contribute to Izmir’s candidacy as IUE”.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Efe Biresselioğlu, Head of Department of Sustainable Energy, reported the following information about the organization to be held:
“Last year we had a very productive workshop with the collaboration of Global Compact, and this year we are having a more extensive second workshop. Students of Sustainable Energy Graduate Degree Program, in addition to the leading institutions and representatives, will get a chance to present their projects at the workshop. International organizations, sectorial meetings, and technical trips play an important role in self-development of students in the field of energy management and policies under the guidance of theoretical information they receive at school”.
After the opening speeches of the organization, which was sponsored by Izmir Chamber of Commerce, Bornova Municipality, İSKEN, Energyworld, and Enerjik, Dr. Yılmaz Argüden, Chairman of the National Steering Committee for UNGC Local Network Turkey, will moderate a press conference, where representatives of UNIDO, UNDP, Accenture, and TÜSİAD, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Efe Biresselioğlu, Head of Department of Sustainable Energy, will attend.
At the end of the sessions, advanced level research projects by students of Sustainable Energy Graduate Degree Program, within IUE Graduate School of Social Sciences, will be presented to participants for evaluation. The Energy Management and Policies Workshop will come to an end with a reception.
The conference is free to attend; however, the participants should send an e-mail to enerjicalistayi@ieu.edu.tr address no later than Monday, May 27 by 17.00.
