THE FUTURE PSYCHOLOGISTS DISCUSS “CONTROL” MECHANISMS
The congress started with the opening speeches by Prof. Dr. Cemali Dinçer, IUE Vice Rector, Prof. Dr. İsmihan Bayramoğlu, IUE Dean of Faculty of Arts and Science, Prof. Dr. Yurdal Topsever,Founder of IUE Department of Psychology, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hakan Çetinkaya, IUE Head of Department of Psychology, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nevra Ersoy, Congress Consultant, and Mehmet Ali Erkuş, President of Turkish Psychology Students Study Group. Prof. Dr. Nuri Bilgin, Ege University Head of Department of Psychology also took part at the opening conference of the congress. The congress, where study groups get involved in activities on sub-fields of psychology, will end on July 9.
IUE Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Cemali Dinçer stated that Izmir had a unique structure, and hosted more than 8 thousand philosophers and psychologists in its history. Prof. Dr. Dinçer, indicated that he was an engineer, and said, “When I was studying abroad for my doctoral degree, I had to take organizational behaviour and industrial psychology courses. Later on, I comprehended the importance of these two courses. I believed in the benefit of offering such courses as we were establishing the Faculty of Engineering”.
Prof. Dr. İsmihan Bayramoğlu, IUE Dean of Faculty of Arts and Science, stated that he believed the congress would be very helpful for psychology students coming from all parts of Turkey, as Prof. Dr. Yurdal Topsever, Founder of IUE Department of Psychology, said that the students chose a difficult discipline to study. Topsever said that in an article he read in TIME Magazine about two months ago, today’s youth was seen as forthcoming, honest, anti-fanatic, innovative, in addition to being technology dependent, lazy, and narcissist. He said, “Something happened in last month in Turkey. This appalled social psychology theorists. Now, they have to re-consider their theories. Future of psychology depend on you, be aware of this”.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hakan Çetinkaya, IUE Head of Department of Psychology, pointed out those well-educated psychology students would carry the profession further. And Mehmet Ali Erkuş, President of Turkish Psychology Students Study Group, mentioned that occupational support should be increased in order to train well-equipped psychologists.
