WORLD PEACE AT IUE
Young individuals between the ages of 16 – 25, discussed their opinions under the flags of the represented countries at the event titled, “ECOMUN 2013 Model United Nations Conference”, and tried to bring a permanent peace. The students established sub committees of the UN throughout the conference. They discussed “Border issues in Africa” at the UN Security Council, “Afghanistan after 2014” at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, “Palestine Problem” at the Second General Assembly ECOFIN Committee, “Cyprus Issue” at the Fourth General Assembly SPECPOL Committee, and “Turkey’s accession period to EU” at the EU-Turkey Summit.
Prof. Dr. Cemali Dinçer, Vice Rector of IUE, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Balkan Devlen, Member of IUE Faculty of Political Science and International Relations, Margit Haeberle, the Consul General of Germany at Izmir, and Güliz Balsarı, Honorary Consul of USA at Izmir took part at the opening of the organization. Igor di Bernardini, Consul for Italy at Izmir, and Tamer Taşkın, Honorary Consul of Republic of South Africa, shared their opinions at the closing of the organization.
Begüm Onar, junior student at IUE Department of Business Administration and Director-General of ECOMUN 2013 Model United Nations Conference, pointed out that young people of different ages had a chance to improve both their diplomatic skills and English skills throughout the organization. Onar, who rebuilt the United Nations with her teams at Izmir University of Economics, said, “We, as the future diplomats, discussed the current world issues under 5 topics. The importance and role of UN is appreciated more today with the recent developments. Therefore, we as a young generation, focused on permanent peace, social, economic, and cultural sharing, and talked about the future of the world we live in. ”
