MANAGER TRAINING FROM IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
IUE School of Foreign Languages conducted a certified training for managers working in English language training in higher education and shared the latest developments. The certificate program, where foreign language education managers from 9 universities in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Turkey attended, aimed to fulfil a need in the field of English language education management.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Evrim Üstünlüoğlu, Director of IUE School of Foreign Languages, stated that world-renowned Andy Hockley and George Pickering, and Bahar Kızıltunalı, IUE Preparatory Program Head, conducted the trainings. Üstünlüoğlu stated that they aimed to contribute to the field of ‘English Language Training Management-ELT Management’, which lately has been a hot topic worldwide but not quite understood in Turkey yet. “We conducted a two week certificate program at IUE for managers working at Foreign School of Languages in Turkey on topics such as ‘Communication’, ‘Problem Solving’, ‘Time Management’, ‘Conflict Management’, ‘Accreditation and Performance Assessment’, and ‘Criteria Based Assessment’. With this certificate program, we raised awareness about the issue and shared some of the recent developments with the educators taking part at different levels of management at universities,” said Üstünlüoğlu.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Evrim Üstünlüoğlu stated that along with Bahar Kızıltunalı from IUE, who holds a diploma on education management, world-renowned George Pickering and Andy Hockley, author of the book titled, “From Teacher to Manager”, conducted training sessions. Üstünlüoğlu said that they would continue to arrange such activities and she pointed out the importance of managers establishing their backgrounds by going through such trainings.
Bahar Kızıltunalı mentioned that intense participation in trainings from different universities in Turkey proved an increasing interest in developments in education and management at the same time. George Pickering stated that Izmir University of Economics proved that it placed significance to development and change by offering a certificate program in a field that is newly emerging worldwide. Andy Hockley pointed out that educators working in language education management needed to increase their competencies in areas as problem solving, conflict management, and communication.
