A protocol was signed between Reşat Anya, Chairman of Executive Board of Söke Chamber of Commerce, and Ekrem Demirtaş, Chairman of Executive Board of Izmir Chamber of Commerce and President of IUE Board of Trustees, for a bright future of Söke youth. First degree blood relatives of members of Söke Chamber of Commerce qualified for 15% discount in annual tuition fees of Izmir University of Economics as part of the protocol.
Along with Demirtaş and Anya, IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen and members of executive board and council members attended the ceremony.
President Ekrem Demirtaş stated that they had students from all around the world and Turkey, and he said, “The medium of instruction is English. There is still not another university in the Aegean Region to offer education in foreign language. We experienced this shortfall back then. I am from Milas. There were no high schools back then either. We have established the university with the thought of our children receiving education with a universal vision at a world class university regardless of the level of their income. 20% of our faculty is foreign nationals. We have students from 86 countries around the world.”
‘We will entrust our business to our children’
Demirtaş stated that they established Izmir University of Economics in order to execute the will of their ancestors in the first National Economy Congress, and as a professional chamber they were always in need of qualified workforce. President Demirtaş reported that graduates started to serve as soon as they got employed. “Children, with whom we are to entrust our businesses, need to be educated in line with the purpose. The ideal would be to train them in accordance with the job. We got the permit from Higher Education Council last year. Now we can offer discount for the children of our colleagues. We hope to see Söke youth at our university,” said Demirtaş.
‘Agriculture is Important’
President Demirtaş indicated that they had the permit to establish Faculty of Agriculture and Food Technologies, and they would be admitting students to the department of agriculture starting from next year. He said, “We are not admitting any students for agriculture this year but we’ll do so next year. Agriculture is very important. We know that it is important for Söke also. There are other products than cotton. We don’t have the details yet about the department but we always welcome new ideas. We are the University of the Business World. Students studying at Culinary Arts department perform their internship in France during summer time. They get paid one thousand 500 euros. All of our students perform internship at good companies. They can perform internship in Söke in agricultural field.”
‘Important Contribution to Söke’
Chairman Reşat Anya told that the state could not keep up with everything; therefore, the chambers contributing to education was of utmost importance. Anya said that Söke youth wanted to study at Izmir University of Economics and 15% scholarship would be very helpful.
IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen stated that they produced more than 8 thousand graduates and they were very proud of the success of their students.
