IUE STUDENTS, WORLD CITIZENS
Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) successfully represent Turkey worldwide with scholarships they receive. İlayda Gökdoğan and Gizem Şentürk, both students of Department of International Trade and Finance who take Chinese as a second foreign language, were invited by Confucius Institute to attend the summer camp at Shanghai University, China. And Kardelen Köse and Gamze Sayat, both students of Foreign Trade and Logistics Program at IUE Vocational School, qualified to receive Fulbright Commission Vocational Education Training Scholarship. Köse will receive education for 1 year at California Santa Rosa Junior International Business and perform internship, while Sayat will attend Northern Virginia Alexandria Logistics program.
IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen stated that the students were a part of universal education and that the University trained students who would rule the future. The Rector also reported that the medium of instruction at the University was English; however the University offered 9 different languages as a second foreign language. “Our students learn about different languages and cultures as they shape their future here. We place importance on second foreign language education. We clearly see the outcomes with our students’ achievements. İlayda Gökdoğan and Gizem Şentürk, who take Chinese as a second foreign language, were invited by Chinese government with the support of Confucius Institute to both practice the Chinese language and learn about the culture of China. Only IUE students from Aegean Region got the opportunity to go to China,” said Prof. Dr. Esen.
‘Students Ready for International Competition’
Prof. Dr. Esen also stated that Kardelen Köse and Gamze Sayat, students of Foreign Trade and Logistics Program (in English) at IUE Vocational School would be studying in America for 1 year and performing internship there. Esen stated the following:
“Thanks to the education they receive at Izmir University of Economics, our students become world citizens because our vision, from the very beginning, was to train students who would be ready for international competition. Share of foreign natural academicians in overall is 20%. In addition to full-time foreign natural academicians, there are many foreign faculty members visiting the University for education and research purposes. All our efforts to create multi-dimensional, multi-cultured learning environment as a means to establish internationalization within the University, is to prepare our students for the 21st century citizenship.”
