80’s INSPIRED STYLE
Fashion is flashing back to the 80’s. Black and white colors, punk items, folkloric, and military styles make up this year’s fashion style. What are also in are velvet fabrics and high slits this winter.
Özge Dikkaya Göknur, Lecturer at IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Fashion and Textile Design, stated that theme of 2015/2016 winter fashion shows that took place in fashion capitals such as Paris, New York, and London, was black and white stripes, zebra designs, and motives.
‘Greetings to Eskimo Fashion’
Göknur said that the season was inspired by the 80’s. “Plenty of optic illusions in different styles and variety took place in 2016 winter fashion shows. The trend got inspired by the US Navy. The coats are long and short, and typical of this style is the double-breasted closure. Summer’s sources of inspiration shifted to the North a bit during the winter months. Designers are coming back with ‘Eskimo’ inspired coats”.
‘Military Style’
Göknur reported velvet would be a huge trend this year as well as floor length skirts and dresses, and she said that reefer jackets, golden ornaments, long black capes, fringes, etc. all reflect a military style. Göknur said, “Last summer’s hippie elements meet with a 70’s wardrobe this winter to make flowing, luxurious silhouettes. Folkloric looking patches enlivened with silk, velvet, woven fabrics and bohemian style print fabrics made an interactive style. Silhouettes covered entirely in leather, torn leggings and mini skirt combinations, slit pants, chains and metal buttons as accessories, and materials remind us of 70’s and 80’s punk scenes.”
‘Leather Patches Are In’
Göknur said that during the summer time the fashion got inspired by the look of 70’s, and now the 80’s were making their mark for the winter. She said that pastels and bold colors and leather graphic design patches would be getting attention in stores.
