PROSPECTIVE PHYSICIANS of IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS STARTED NEW ACADEMIC YEAR
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Medicine started 2018 – 2019 Academic Year with its new students. Sixty prospective physicians took the stage to swear the “Medical Student Oath” at the White Coat Ceremony of IUE faculty of Medicine that took place at IUE Conference Hall.
Selami Özpoyraz, President of Izmir Chamber of Commerce Council (ITO), IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Can Muğan, IUE Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar and Prof. Dr. Filiz Başkan, Ahmet Cahit Kırmacı, Member of IUE Board of Trustees, academicians, and guests attended the ceremony.
Prof. Dr. Hakan Abacıoğlu, Dean of IUE Faculty of Medicine, reported that the Faculty has been accepted to the World Directory of Medical Schools membership. Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu said, “The World Directory defines a “medical school” as an educational institution that provides a complete or full program of instruction leading to a basic medical qualification that permits the holder to obtain a license to practice as a medical doctor or physician. If you are not a part of that directory, you are not recognized that well. Faculty of Medicine, Izmir University of Economics has entered that directory as of last week.”
Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu reminded that IUE faculty of Medicine was very young, that the Faculty started to admit its first students last year after its establishment with the decision of the Cabinet in 2014. Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu said that they were more excited to admit new students in the second year of the Faculty. “The founding faculty went through an intensive period of almost three years that included training, curriculum development, etc. We admitted our first students last year. We started out with an innovative curriculum that looks out for social responsibility. The world is going through a period of serious environmental issues. There is global warming on one hand and environmental pollution on the other hand. Based on that, the theme, planetary health in Turkey, entered our curriculum. One of the main objectives of this program is to raise healthy medical students,” said Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu.
Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu, who stated that they were up against a new generation of students who had different learning styles, addressed the students saying, “You have come a long way to be here. You worked very hard. May God speed you”.
Seher Arı, who delivered a speech on behalf of IUE Faculty of Medicine students, said that the white coat symbolized purity, transparency, and struggle against difficulties, sacrifice, and hope. Azat Onur Arcan, student who has been placed to the Faculty of Medicine with the highest score in 2018 – 2019 academic year, said that they were going to look out for the white coat in every stage of their profession.
