A special project for the ‘100th anniversary’
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) prepared a special agenda as part of the “The Journal of the National Struggle” project, which was initiated to share the day-to-day struggles of the Turkish Nation during their fight for survival, with pictures and important headlines. The agenda, which was prepared in honor of the 100th anniversary of the April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day, presents all the historical developments in 1920 on a daily basis, stated IUE Rector Prof. Murat Aşkar and said, “This agenda, which is a picture depiction of our nation’s tall and proud stance that is an inspiration to all, is the first of its kind.”
Izmir University of Economics started “The Journal of the National Struggle” project that sheds light on recent history of the nation, 100 years after Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s famous quote “As they have come, so they will go” on 13 November 1918. The archives of the Presidency of the Republic and the General Staff Presidency were utilized in this project, where all the historical developments between the dates of 13 November 1918 and 29 October 1923 were planned to be shared via seminars, meetings, exhibitions, and social media. The project, which includes a day-to-day journal of the historical developments during the period until the proclamation of the Republic and planned to be continued until 2023, has been crowned with a special agenda for the one hundredth year of the establishment of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) in 1920. All the historical developments from 100 years ago have been relayed with the project that was carried out by IUE academics and students.
YOUTH LEARNS ABOUT THE ALTRUISM AND BRAVERY OF THE NATION
IUE Rector Prof. Murat Aşkar pointed that they place great importance on this project in terms of telling the youth how this nation gained independence as a result of many sacrifices and struggles. Prof. Aşkar said, “Our history gives us strength and inspiration in every sense. Our ancestors, under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, have written a heroic saga and entrusted us with protecting this heavenly country. We are working full throttle on raising individuals who are well-equipped, under the guidance of science and wisdom in order to maintain the development of our country. However, we also believe that it is necessary to tell our young people about our history and how as a nation we achieved the “impossible”. We brought this project into life in order to make our youth understand, feel how this nation gained its independence after such a long and difficult struggle. We will continue this project until the 100th anniversary of the Republic. This way, we will always remember the National Struggle period.”
WE WILL CONTINUE WITH DIFFERENT PROJECTS
Prof. Aşkar continued his speech as: “In our agenda, we relayed many important historical developments that took place in 1920, which makes up an important part of the National Struggle period, through pictures. The fact that the Presidency of the Republic and the General Staff Presidency supported our project with their archives, made this project more efficient. This way, we were able to reach and share very special pictures. We shared the visuals depicting how we achieved the Grand Victory during the National Struggle time before in ‘The Journal of the National Struggle’ titled IUE Instagram account. We will continue to tell our National Struggle via different activities in the days to come. I would like to take this opportunity to commemorate Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and all our martyrs.”
