IUE’s 20th anniversary project, a ‘publishing house’
Izmir University of Economics (IUE), which continues to work with the aim of bringing leaders and innovative young people to Turkey as the first foundation university of the Aegean Region, topped off the 20th anniversary of its establishment with a special project and established a "publishing house". The first book of the publishing house, which started its activities under the name of "Izmir University of Economics Press" and will serve Turkey in general, is the work called Kervan Köprüsü. Mahmut Özgener, President of IUE Board of Trustees, said, “We are a university aiming to bring in permanent works to our country and Izmir. The publishing house we established with our own means is one of the most important steps in this. We are proud to be one of the few foundation universities in Turkey that can establish a publishing house.”
Izmir University of Economics, which was established on April 14, 2001 and started off with 288 students, has grown rapidly in 20 years and produced 18 thousand graduates, and succeeded to be among the 10 most preferred foundation universities in Turkey last year.
IT WILL MEET AN IMPORTANT NEED
The last step taken by IUE, which aims to develop projects that will contribute to social life as well as producing knowledge, was the publishing house that was established as a result of approximately 1 year of work. Anyone with work in different fields such as history, literature, law, and art will be able to apply to the publishing house where academic and scientific books will be prepared. In addition, original works about the city will be evaluated.
The first book of IUE Press, which will meet an important need, was the Kervan Köprüsü (Caravan Bridge), which played an important role in the transformation of Izmir into an international trade center. The impact of the Caravan Bridge on the change and development of Izmir was conveyed to the readers in detail, taking into account historical processes in the book written by historian-writer Erkan Serçe.
WE PLAN THE FUTURE, CREATE VALUE
President of IUE Board of Trustees, Mahmut Özgener said that they are a university that produces projects for Turkey and Izmir, creates value and plans the future. President Özgener said, “We aim to contribute to the production of knowledge in our country, encourage the use of Turkish language and to convey the latest scientific literature produced in foreign languages to the readers with the works we will bring to life through our publishing house. The editor-in-chief of our publishing house is highly experienced Raşit Çavaş, the founder of Oğlak Publications and the editor-in-chief of Yapı Kredi Publications. We are happy to realize such a meaningful project in our 20th year.”
WE ARE WORKING ON NEW PROJECTS
Stating that they will continue to produce different projects as a university, IUE Rector, Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar said, “We are a university that sees the entire Izmir as our campus and sees doing pioneering studies in our city as our primary goal. If we want to raise innovative, leader and entrepreneurial young people, we must act like this as a university. One of the main factors in the success of the University is this perspective and the desire to do what is not done. This is what makes our university different. Our first book is published, but there are also many book projects we are currently working on. We aim to bring them to life shortly. I believe that our publishing house will become a center where many works will be created as references.”
