Award for 'Urban Implant' and 'Creative Life' projects

Beste Demircan and Alp Buğra Nazar, graduates of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), were awarded for their living space projects in the "Student Graduation Projects" competition organized by the Association of Izmir Free-Lance Architects. The projects, 'Urban Implant' and 'Creative and Coexisting Living', which succeeded in receiving the 'exhibition award' by designing environmentally friendly, aesthetic and disabled-friendly projects, will be shared with residents of Izmir at various events to be held in the upcoming period.

In the competition held by the Association of Izmir Free-Lance Architects to select the best university graduation projects prepared by architecture students and to encourage young people to work in this field, an evaluation was made for 2020 and 2021. A total of nearly 70 projects participated in the competition for two years.

'CREATIVE AND COEXISTING LIVING' PROJECT

Beste Demircan (24), a graduate of IUE Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, who also double majored in Architecture, was awarded for her design of the living complex called "Creative and Coexisting Living". Demircan, who prepared a project with social living areas where works of art are produced and exhibited, and disabled people can easily benefit from all opportunities, managed to attract the attention of the jury.

‘URBAN IMPLANT’ WAS ADMIRED

Alp Buğra Nazar (25), who graduated from IUE Department of Architecture last year, focused on the area next to the Bölge metro stop in Bornova in his project called 'Urban Implant'. Nazar, who designed an area and structure where agricultural production and R&D studies will be carried out and urban and rural life will be carried out together, stood out with his work. Nazar succeeded in receiving an award as a result of the evaluation made for 2020.

I AIMED FOR AWARENESS FOR THE DISABLED

Stating that she studied for one semester for the project, Beste Demircan said, “I aimed to raise awareness especially for the disabled in my project. I tried to create all the details of the project by seeing from the perspective of the disabled. I conveyed what should be in the project, including the pedestrian paths, and the tactile paving on the ground. The details in the project I prepared can be easily applied in many points of Izmir. I tried to create a design that appeals to those who want to do artistic works such as painting and sculpture, and those who want to relax during the day. I am very happy to receive this award.”

URBAN VOID WILL BE ELIMINATED

Giving information about the details of the project, Alp Buğra Nazar said, “There is an undefined, idle urban void between Ankara Street and Bölge Metro Station in Izmir. The connecting bridge over the void is valuable as it is the busiest crossing point in the immediate vicinity. With this project, I aimed to slow down the rapid circulation on the bridge with alternative options. At the same time, I planned to build a unifying structure, a center right in the middle of residential and industrial/commercial zones. I thought that many studies could take place in this center, including agricultural production, and R&D activities. I aimed to create an area in the region where the people of Izmir can have a pleasant time during the day, and also to establish a center where the heart of the economy beats. The project aims to shorten and strengthen the food chain, to develop the production network, and to reveal creative methods for the environmental and social needs of the society for all environmental and social problems.”
