IUE’s 'entrepreneurship and innovation' success
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) was included in the list of the top 50 universities in Turkey according to the entrepreneurship and innovation performances. IUE, which was ranked 42nd in the ‘2021 Entrepreneurial and Innovative University Index’ announced as a result of the examination conducted under the leadership of TUBITAK, experienced the pride of being on the list again after a one-year hiatus.
IUE ranked 11th among foundation universities in Turkey with a total score of 36.30 by achieving a significant increase compared to last year. The index, which measures the entrepreneurship and innovation performance of universities, was announced by Mustafa Varank, the Minister of Industry and Technology. The index was created as a result of a 9-month intensive and meticulous study of the data set of 1 million cells collected from 191 universities with more than 50 faculty members.
WE ARE ADVANCING STEADILY
IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar said that they are steadily advancing towards the development of entrepreneurship and innovation. Prof. Dr. Aşkar said, “All the factors in our university were interlocked with the aim of creating an entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem. We take decisive steps by determining a qualified growth and development strategy. The vision of entrepreneurship and innovation of the Izmir Chamber of Commerce (IZTO) and the goals of our university match. We always get support from IZTO regarding this. This unity adds new values to the youth, our city and country. It creates new opportunities for our academics and students. We will continue to take decisive steps in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship by further developing our strategic planning.”
HIGH TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIAL BENEFIT
Prof. Dr. Aşkar continued as follows: “We bring high technology in engineering and qualitative transformation and social benefit in social sciences into the forefront. We are in search of providing solutions to the needs of the business world and developing innovative ideas suitable for our city and region. With this aim, we have received many awards as a university in the fields of energy, health and technology recently. I can show many projects as example such as the diagnostic kit that detects the Covid-19 virus, the smart robot that sterilizes the environment, and the autonomous transport robot that meets an important need of the industrialist. Additionally, the University ranks 8th in the category of number of national and international science awards, 3rd in the number of national utility model certificates, and 8th in the number of BIGG (Individual Young Enterprise) companies. In other words, we are leading in all three very important criteria nationwide. Being included in the entrepreneurship and innovation index is an indication that we are on the right track. We will rank higher in the coming years.”
