Academic wedding witnesses

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar and Lecturer Şebnem Ergizler did not refuse their student Cenan Esen's offer of being her wedding witness and witnessed the happiest moment of the young couple. Rector Aşkar, who did not turn down Cenan, who reached him by sending a message on social media, handed over the marriage certificate to his student. The Rector said, “When I saw Cenan's message, I got emotional and very happy. Being with them on such a special day was an indescribable feeling for me too. At our university, we have provided a family environment where love is dominant and people are extremely bonded with each other.”

Cenan Esen (28), a student of IUE Vocational School Applied English and Translation Program, met her husband, Osman Esen, who is also 28, and works in a private company, on January 9, while traveling by ferry. On their way from Karşıyaka to Balçova, the young couple, who took the first step of a love journey that they had never imagined, bonded with each other in a short time.

The couple, who swept up in a whirlwind romance, decided to get married 1.5 months after they met. Continuing her education at the University, Cenan Esen messaged IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, on social media, and said, ‘I will be honored and very happy to see you as my wedding witness. I hope you can make it.’ Rector Aşkar, who was moved and happy with this message, accepted the offer. Later, Cenan Esen visited Rector Aşkar with her fiancée and delivered their wedding invitation. The young couple called ​​Instructor Şebnem Ergizler, from IUE School of Foreign Languages, on the phone for her to be the other wedding witness. Ergizler also accepted the offer and accompanied her student on her happiest day. The young couple got married at the Balçova Municipality Wedding Hall.

Wishing happiness to the newly married couple, IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar said, “It is very valuable for me to be with our students on their special days and to accompany them in their happiness, in addition to their academic achievements. Surely, our students will receive their diplomas and start their careers. These are extremely important. However, it is also very important for them to collect unforgettable memories on campus during their studies, to see themselves as an indispensable member of the Izmir University of Economics Community, and to establish good relations with their academics. We try to achieve this at the University, and we keep our social bonds strong with our students. Thanking Rector Aşkar and Şebnem Ergizler, who did not leave them alone on their wedding day, Cenan Esen said, “I never thought I would have a wedding like this. It was really fast for me to meet my spouse, decide to get married and have my ceremony. It's been a 3 months that I will never forget for the rest of my life. Our rector is a modest person who cares about his students. I was encouraged by this and sent a message on social media and invited him to my wedding. Later, my fiancée and I visited him and delivered the wedding invitation. I am glad I invited him. I thought he wouldn't turn me down, and he proved me right. When I called and invited my teacher Şebnem by phone, she was very happy about it, and she immediately accepted. I would like to thank them both very much, they made me extremely happy.”
