The contest, organized by the Turkish Mathematical Olympiad Platform, has been held uninterruptedly since the 2019-2020 Academic Year. The scientific committee of the contest consists of mathematicians from different universities and schools across Turkey. The content of the contest, which is open to all students who are interested in mathematics, is prepared by the members of the scientific committee in accordance with the curriculum of the Ministry of National Education, taking into account the achievements of international peers.
WORKSHOP FIRST, THEN THE CONTEST
Stating that they are very happy to share the excitement of the young people, Prof. Dr. Gözde Yazgı Tütüncü, Head of IUE Department of Mathematics, said, “In addition to providing a qualified education opportunity to the students at our university, we also attach great importance to organizing activities that will increase the interest of young people at the secondary and high school level and make them love mathematics. Last December, we organized the ‘Mathematics in My Profession Workshop’ in cooperation with the Izmir Provincial Directorate of National Education. We brought together 140 students and 28 teachers from 14 high schools on our campus. In addition to these, we, as a university, held the Izmir leg of the Turkish Mathematical Olympiad this year. We also hosted the award ceremony after the competition.”
RELATED TO MANY PROFESSIONS
Prof. Dr. Tütüncü continued as follows: “Mathematics is a field that is closely related to many professions today. We use mathematics in many areas from communication to business, from the concept of metaverse to blockchain. Although job descriptions and technology improves, the need for mathematics is always the same. Mathematics is also very important for the acquisition of daily life skills and the development of the ability to approach subjects from different perspectives. We are ready to contribute as a department to every activity that will encourage young people to math at an early age.”
