They Received Their Diplomas and Recited the ‘Physician’s Pledge’

59 young physicians, who successfully completed their education at Faculty of Medicine of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), received their diplomas. The young physicians, who successfully completed the 6-year educational journey they started by putting on their white coats, threw their caps into the air and experienced the happiness of graduation to the fullest. The young graduates recited the ‘Physician’s Oath’ together, earning a big round of applause from the guests.

The 2023-2024 Academic Year Faculty of Medicine Graduation Ceremony, which was held at the amphitheater on the campus of Izmir University of Economics, was attended by Rector, Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu, the President of IZTO Assembly, Selami Özpoyraz and Vice President, Mehmet Tahir Özdemir, Acting Chair of the Executive Board of IUE Medical Point Hospitals Group, Veysi Kubba, President of the Izmir Medical Chamber, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ceyhun Özyurt, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. İlgi Şemin, Vice Chief Physician of IUE Medical Point Hospital, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Önder Limon, board of trustees members, and invited guests.

THEY PERFORMED A MUSICAL RECITAL FOR THEIR FELLOW GRADUATES

The ceremony was hosted by Ceren Ayık and Berk Yılmaz, students at the Faculty of Medicine. The musical recital, performed by medical students İrem Sezginer on the violin and Müge Çolakoğlu on the piano for their graduating friends, enlivened the evening and was well received by the guests.

YOU ARE THE HOPE

Addressing the students at the ceremony, IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu said, “What you have learned in faculty of medicine is the ancient story of humanity's boundless curiosity and search for knowledge, written over thousands of years. It is a story distilled with science, experience, and the values of our profession. This story is valuable, respected, and honorable. That's why we say in our pledge, ‘I will show the respect and gratitude that my teachers, colleagues, and students deserve.’ Now it’s your turn to write this story with science and the values of our profession. We must transform for a sustainable life. Every transformation requires leadership. You, as the educated and equipped individuals of this society, are obliged to lead this transformation. Frankly, I think this is less of a choice and more of a moral duty and obligation. You are the hope.”

YOU ARE THE BRIDGE THAT EMBRACES SOCIETY WITH SCIENCE

Emphasizing that phyisicans are one of the most important bridges that embrace society with science, Rector Abacıoğlu said, “When this bridge is built with compassion, respect, and care, it touches people's hearts. There is no medicine or wisdom without touching the heart. I know you will touch hearts. Despite all the challenges our profession faces, we will continue to prioritize the well-being and health of our patients and honor them. Because we have the calmness, courage, and freedom to protect and develop the honor and respected traditions of the medical profession with all our might. May your path be bright with knowledge, wisdom, and love.”

WE HAVE BECOME AN IMPORTANT MILESTONE

Acting Chair of the Executive Board of IUE Medical Point Hospitals Group, Veysi Kubba, emphasized the strong partnership between Izmir University of Economics and Medical Point Hospitals Group and delivered important messages to the graduates. Kubba said, “With the knowledge and experience you have gained, you are setting out to touch human lives, contribute to public health, and become the leading health professionals of the future. As Medical Point, we have been an important milestone in your career journey, and we will continue to be. In our hospital, you have had the opportunity to work with the latest technologies and the most complex cases to become the best doctors of our country; moreover, you have observed our principles of love, respect, patience, confidentiality, loyalty, and sincerity firsthand, and I believe you have adopted them as your own principles. We hope that you will continue to progress in this direction throughout your working lives. We would like to thank everyone who supported you during this process, especially your families. Without their support, we could not celebrate these achievements. Remember that as Izmir University of Economics and Medical Point, we are always by your side.”

Dean of the IUE Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. İlgi Şemin, expressed their pride in the graduates, and said, “The world needs doctors who are not only skilled in the science of medicine but also deeply committed to the art of disease prevention and health promotion. The world needs you. You are not just graduates of a medical school; you are torch bearers of a future where healthcare is guided by social responsibility, empathy, and innovation. You are the ones who will challenge the status quo, seek out the truth, and push the boundaries of what is possible. By doing so, you will bring hope and healing to countless lives. As you leave here and step into your new roles, remember that being a doctor is not just a profession, but a calling. It is a commitment to serve humanity, to stand by those who suffer, and to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. We are incredibly proud of each one of you. Your success is our success, and we are happy to have had the privilege of witnessing your journey. May your path be bright, and may everything go your way.”
