“Wrong Measurement Means Faulty Construction”
The ‘Laser Level Applications Workshop’ course, offered by Şeref Alpago, a Lecturer and Civil Engineer in the Department of Architecture at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), was held with the participation of 50 students. The event, organized by the IUE Construction Club, answered the questions ‘What is a laser level, what does it do, and in which areas is it used?’ The training emphasized the importance of measurement in construction manufacturing and ensured that participants were familiar with market applications in this regard. After the theoretical training, the students had the opportunity to apply what they learned and gain experience with laser level tools.
INDISPENSABLE FOR CONSTRUCTION SITES
Lecturer Şeref Alpago, who provided students with important information about the construction manufacturing process in the course, stated that the manufacturing process on construction sites begins and ends with measurement. Alpago said, “The laser level device is indispensable for construction sites. Laser levels, which can single-handedly perform the tasks of many conventional hand tools, are used for leveling, plumbing, horizontal alignment, giving direction, and squaring (90-degree setup). Laser levels emit continuous lines of laser light horizontally and vertically. They also indicate the lower and upper plumb points with light. While auxiliary equipment is not needed in closed areas, the range increases up to 200 meters in open terrain with a receiver. Levels are indispensable for construction sites thanks to their fast use and precise measurement.”
CAN CAUSE ERRORS
Stating that many negative situations can occur on construction sites where the correct equipment is not used correctly, Alpago said, “The most significant of the negative situations is vertical alignment (plumb) errors in places such as elevator shafts. Errors lead to vertical inclinations, the elevator shaft can narrow, and the elevator cabin of the required size according to regulations may not fit into the narrowed space. This can lead to legal permit problems in the building.” Emphasizing that great care should be taken with measurements to avoid such disruptions in construction, Alpago warned, “It should be ensured that the correct equipment is used in the most correct way.” It was also stated that the IUE Construction Club will continue to regularly organize such training sessions every month, aiming for students to make a difference in their professional lives with these trainings.
