I bought a used Audi A4 about four months ago and so far I really like it, but lately I keep hearing people talk about the transmission and I realised I don’t actually understand it properly. I know it has something to do with changing gears, but that is about where my knowledge ends. Last week I was driving in traffic and the car gave a small jerk when it shifted from second to third, and it only happened once, but it made me nervous. After that I started reading around online. I came across a page with Expert answers from Audi Transmission Repair on what an Audi transmission is, and it explained things in a much simpler way than the random videos I watched before. From what I understood, the transmission takes the power from the engine and sends it to the wheels in a way that matches your speed, so the engine doesn’t have to work too hard or too little. It also said that many Audi models use different types, like the dual clutch one, which they call S tronic, and the older automatic ones with a torque converter, and some use a CVT too. Honestly this was news to me because I assumed all automatic cars worked the same way. Now I’m wondering which type my car has, and how I can even find out without opening the manual, which I can’t find anyway. Is there a sticker somewhere or something on the dashboard that tells you? Another thing I’m curious about is the fluid. I read that transmission fluid needs to be changed at some point, but my previous owner didn’t give me any service papers, so I have no idea if it was ever done. Some people on another forum said it is a lifetime fluid and you should never touch it, while others said that is a myth and you should change it every sixty thousand kilometres or so. That really confused me because both sides sounded sure about it. I don’t want to spend money on something I don’t need, but I also don’t want to ignore it and end up with a big repair bill later. I have heard stories of people paying a lot for a gearbox replacement and I really don’t want to be that person. So I guess my questions are these. How do you know if your gearbox is starting to have a problem, other than the obvious jerking? Does a slight delay when you press the pedal count as a warning sign? Also, is it normal for the car to feel a little different when it is cold in the morning compared to when it is warm? Mine feels slightly slow to respond for the first few minutes, and I’m not sure if that is normal for these cars or if I’m just being paranoid. I also wonder if driving style matters much. I tend to drive gently most of the time, but sometimes I accelerate quickly to merge onto the highway, and I don’t know if that is bad for it in the long run. If any of you own an Audi or have worked on one, I would love to hear what you noticed in your own cars and what you wish you had known earlier. Did you do regular fluid changes? Did you use a specialist or just the main dealer? And roughly how much did it cost you, if you don’t mind sharing? I’m trying to make a plan so I can look after the car properly instead of just waiting until something goes wrong. Any simple advice, even small things, would really help me, because right now I feel like I’m learning everything from scratch. Thanks a lot in advance, and sorry for the long post, I just wanted to give enough details so you can understand my situation.
