I keep seeing “just add Suica” as if that also gives you maps.

What I think I understand, and I want to be told if this is wrong:

Welcome Suica Mobile (JR East) is a wallet/IC card. As of March 2026 it is valid 180 days and they say no refund. It is not a data plan.

Maps, Google Translate camera, hotel Wi-Fi logins, and IC top-up from the app still want a packet network. Airport free Wi-Fi is a queue.

eSIM and FeliCa are different radios. Most US/EU Android phones can install a Japan eSIM (check EID with *#06#) and still cannot add Suica to Wallet because they lack FeliCa. iPhone is the usual exception for Suica Mobile.

For a 7-day Tokyo trip I copied checkout prices on 2026-08-29 (re-check before you pay):

Airalo Japan 7d 5GB $10 / 10GB $17. Their “unlimited” 7d is $27 with a FUP: 3GB/24h then ~1 Mbps.

Holafly Japan 7d $27.50. Published hotspot cap is 1GB/day. I could not find a published Japan GB/day FUP number, so I am not repeating blog figures.

Ubigi (Docomo): 10GB/7d $14, 5GB/15d $10. I am not copying a 7-day unlimited USD from blogs; that SKU 404’d on their site when I checked.

Is the practical answer “physical IC card for gates + eSIM for maps”, or am I overcomplicating this?

Dated comparison (Airalo SoftBank +1, Holafly KDDI/SoftBank, Ubigi Docomo): https://before-you-land.tiiny.site/japan/esim/

Disclosure: if you buy Airalo through the notes below I may earn a commission. Holafly and Ubigi links there are official/untracked. I did not invent SKUs; prices copied 2026-08-29 from checkout pages and should be re-checked.
