For Sikhs, that promise also means confronting unfinished questions of justice — the 1984 assault on Darbar Sahib, the state-enabled massacres that followed, disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Punjab, and Sikh prisoners still incarcerated decades later.

Remembering these injustices is not a rejection of India or its people. It is a belief that a nation is strongest when freedom, justice and equal rights truly apply to everyone.
