Erasmus+ Student Mobility for Studies (SMS)

Erasmus+ student mobility for studies is carried out within the framework of the existing bilateral agreements of the higher education institution holding the Standard or Extended ERASMUS+ University Charter to exchange ERASMUS+.

This type of mobility enables students enrolled in higher education institutions to spend an integrated period of study abroad, lasting between 2 and 12 months (equivalent to one, two, or in some cases even three semesters, depending on the educational structure of the host university), in another program country. This opportunity is available once per study cycle (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD).

Students studying in the freshman year of associate or undergraduate degrees are not allowed to benefit from this program. The participating students have to be full-time students.

Application, selection, and announcement process

Students who want to participate in Erasmus+ student mobility for studies should make their applications via the TURNAPortal within the given time in the related call announcement. Students interested in applying can select their preferred universities based on the Inter-Institutional Erasmus+ Agreements available in the "Erasmus+ Agreement and Quotas" section, in accordance with their department. Higher Education Institutions select their students under the selection criteria specified by the National Agency. These criteria are determined for each academic year and announced by the National Agency.

Students follow the announcements on the website and notice boards of the Office of International Relations and make their applications in the academic term previous to the academic term that they want to go.

Erasmus+ application announcements for each semester are made on the Office of International Affairs's main page.  All the applications are evaluated under the specified criteria, and the results are announced on the website and on TurnaPortal.

Erasmus+ Agreements & Quotas

Izmir University of Economics has Erasmus+ agreements with a great sum of universities around Europe which helps many more students/academics benefit from the program.

Quotas are valid for a whole academic year and can not be renewed at the end of each semester.

It is the student’s responsibility to search the Medium of Instruction of the university where he/she wants to study within the scope of the Erasmus+ program and to follow accommodation, passport, and visa application procedures.

Financial Support

Students have the chance to receive financial support from the European Commission for the period that they stay abroad for the program. The amount of the monthly grant allocated for the students is determined each year by the National Agency and announced in the Application Guide.

The financial support is not going to be reimbursed, it does not aim to cover all the expenses of the student; the purpose is to help the student for the additional expenses caused by the mobility. Erasmus+ students do not pay a separate tuition fee to their host university; however, they will cover all their living expenses themselves.

The increasing demand for Erasmus+ may cause deductions in the amount of the grant allocated by the National Agency, and the possibility of institutions not receiving the amounts they demanded each year arises. In this case, the institution answers the additional grant call by the National Agency. If the additional grant cannot be allocated, the selected students may benefit from the exchange opportunity without receiving a grant.

Erasmus+ mobility selection process is completed before the grant results are announced by National Agency in order to correspond to the deadlines of the partner universities. However, the students are regarded as candidate students until the grant amounts are announced by National Agency. Principal candidacy can be announced after the grant results are declared.

Being selected for Erasmus+ program does not mean that the grant is deserved. If the grant is inadequate, the number of students to be granted will be determined according to the ERASMUS+ score of the applicants based on Faculty, Graduate School, Vocational School in accordance with the grant amount allocated to our University by the Turkish National Agency.

After being selected

The names and e-mail addresses of the selected students are sent to the partner university by the Office of International Affairs and it is requested to direct the students about application. Students complete their paperwork by following these directions and the instructions on the website of the partner university and submit them to the partner universities as soon as possible.

Partner university sends the letter of acceptance needed for a visa when the students complete their applications successfully.

Students carry out visa procedures by getting in touch with the embassy/ consulate of the related country.

Erasmus+ students should select the courses they will take in the partner university together with the International Exchange Programs Coordinators. The courses that will be taken and their equivalents at IUE are approved by the International Exchange Programs Coordinator and Head of Department. 

Excused Status & Tuition

The students are regarded as “excused” in the period they go abroad with Erasmus+ Program.

The students going abroad with Erasmus+ Program pay the tuition fee of that period to our University. They do not pay a fee to the university abroad.

The students going abroad in the Fall semester pay their tuition fees by the end of August at the latest. The students going abroad in the spring semester pay their tuition fees by the end of January. If the students go abroad before these periods, they can pay in advance.

The students accepted into the Erasmus+ Program receive monthly funds from the European Commission.  The amount of funds is announced by the National Agency each year.  Students receive 70 % of the total amount before they go abroad, and the remaining 30% of the amount are paid when they return to Turkey.

Grade Equivalence

If the outgoing Erasmus+ students of Izmir University of Economics are provided by the host university with a transcript in which ECTS grades of the courses are included then ECTS grade equivalence table adapted to IUE letter grades is used in the conversion process.

If the host universities do not provide the students with ECTS transcript, then specific grade equivalence tables are used in order to transfer the grades.
