Philosophy

Today, I finished reading P1V2 of Ascendance of a Bookworm, and it's still awesome. I'm starting to get a little concerned for the MC, which is a good thing since it indicates a move away from the typical MC in LNs that always wins and gets things right and that we can be sure will succeed. Of course, I do know Myne will succeed and progress (that's the story), but it doesn't feel like she'll get handed victory in a silver helmet; she will have to struggle and wield all her tools as blades to carve out her place in this world. I like that.

I started reading Greenwood by Michael Christie. I'm about 10% win, and I'm enjoying it. I like how some of the chapters have been snippets, rather than direct continuations of the main story; it feels like I'm being told this story, asking questions, and getting my questions answered: it feels transcendent of the medium while keeping a comfortable distance between the reader and the narrative. The setting is compelling and engaging, both aesthetically (with the beautifully soulful descriptions of trees and forests) and philosophically (with its promise to explore the prospect of ecological collapse), but the idea that ecological collapse would result in a continuation of the current economic systems seems unrealistic (why would people want money if everything is broken and there's nothing to pay for?); at the same time, I can't help but consider the dreadful (and I mean dreadful) prospect that it's not unrealistic, and is indeed what has already happened all over the world. It's been feeling like philosophy masquerading as literary fiction.

And I wore shorts, today! I just got back home from my trip to Prague. I liked the city, overall, though there are way too many cars, in retrospect, though the public transport is pretty good, at least within city limits.
