536 may have been the worst year in human history. Powerful volcanic eruptions pushed the planet into a prolonged cold spell, causing famine and disease, according to the website World Gone Mad.
Furthermore, in 536, an unusual dimming of sunlight was observed across Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia.
According to the Byzantine historian Procopius of Caesarea, the sun shone with a dull light, similar to the moon, year-round. Climate change brought summer snow to China and caused massive crop failures across vast areas.
Modern studies of tree rings and ice cores from glaciers in Greenland and the Alps have revealed microscopic particles of volcanic glass, the chemical composition of which is similar to that of Icelandic volcanoes.
Huge amounts of ash and sulfur were emitted into the atmosphere, causing this phenomenon.
Further eruptions, including that of Ilopango Volcano in modern-day El Salvador around 539-540 CE, further increased atmospheric pollution. The resulting dust cloud blocked sunlight, leading to long-term consequences.
The Northern Hemisphere entered its coldest period in 2,000 years. Tree rings became significantly narrower, indicating a sharp decline in plant growth.
Average summer temperatures in Europe dropped by 1.5-2.5 degrees Celsius. Prolonged crop failures led to famine, which weakened the population and compromised their immunity.
Many experts believe the events of 536 AD offer an important warning for the modern world. Today’s technology makes societies more resilient than in the past.
