Freakish(ly Cool!) Green Heron Anatomy
-
Part One:
From Harold Wilion
People are constantly sending me messages all day long asking, "Harold, what does a Green heron's tongue look like?". Well, for all you many hundreds of folks that keep asking, here's my answer. Sorry you asked now? 😁
Part 2:

From Nate Dow
I knew of the peculiarities of the green heron's mouth but this is the first chance I have had to illustrate it. The tongue has two parts, a triangular base with a very thin strip extending from the base. The tubular thing here in the back is actually the bird's throat. When they compress their long necks, it pops up into their mouth. Freaky...
Nikon D780, Sigma 150-600, about 20 yards away.
Part 3:
If that wasn't cool enough for you, check out this article for some more nifty things these long necks can do.
. See just how fast a Green Heron's strike is! Don't worry, it's got a slow motion replay so you can actually see it! 😉
