Oof, I can't comment on the whole Woody Allen thing right now, but yeah, Jeff Daniels was such a badass upon "Purple Rose." It's nice to hear that he turned it into such a wonderful thing. <3

Great movie but I take issue with calling out the 50s and 80s because each decade has its strict social morays. Pleasantville is about all belief systems trapping people into being a person that isn't really who they are.
The sister (Reese Witherspoon) believes she's a bad girl until she gets a chance to be herself without the outside influence. Just like the soda jerk artist (Jeff Daniels) who wants to be an artist but everyone just thinks of him as the guy who serves sodas. The movie is about the heartache and excitement of self discovery.
