A serving size of peanut butter is one.
One spoon.
One inch.
One jar.
etc.

Aren't the serving sizes intentionally small so they can get away with saying that stuff has less sugar?

You guys get multiple servings from a jar?

Smaller portion = less sugar, fat, salt, calories etc... If I remember correctly a few states have addressed making unrealistic portion sizes for the label as making misleading claims.

That’s a European serving. The rest of the jar is one Texan serving.

They are almost always 1 oz (28g).
But, individually packaged stuff does tend to pull bullshit like “1 serving=half a bottle of soda”
Peanut butter is probably going to be fine though

I put like 10x this on some graham crackers last night 😬

we don't even list serving sizes on our stuff, just nutrients per 100g so you can count it yourself

It's better measured in thickness. Obviously, you'll cover whatever it's being smeared on from edge to edge.

Nutrients should always be listed in pr 100g or in percent (effectively the same).

I know, I was making a reference to how ridiculously large American portion sizes are.

Given that the most typical use is spreading it on a slice of bread, I’ll argue, no I’m not out of touch, everyone else is. When the “serving size” can’t fill the expected use case, it’s not the consumer that’s wrong

I saw a wrapped item that did the opposite, which was weird. It was a pack of 3 pieces and a serving was 4.

I used to think this was a bad idea because while objective numbers are great, it can be difficult to apply it to real life. But then manufacturers play games with serving size so it’s no more realistic than a flat 100g, so I’ll pick the more honest choice

Probably to hit some magic number:
Contains 10 g of protein per serving!!^*^
^*^Serving size 10 kg

I'm in touch with my peanut butter jar

100g maps directly to percentages. 3.5g sugar per serving, 1 serving is ⅓ cup -> ??% sugar per unit weight. 9g sugar per 100g -> 9% per unit weight. makes it possible to actually calculate nutrient intake in your head.
