IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS’ SMART BUILDING SHOWERED WITH AWARDS
The new building of School of Foreign Languages of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) which is equipped with high-tech smart classrooms for students became a finalist in categories of “Best Education Building” and “Best Architectural Design Building” at the “Sign of The City Awards 2017” contest. The award ceremony, for the contest organized under the leadership of Hürriyet and project sponsorship of Lineadecor, will take place on November 28.
X-RAYS ARE BEING TRANSFORMED FOR “EARLY DIAGNOSIS” AWARENESS
Students are transforming the x-ray films, used for diagnosis of illnesses, into various objects in order to create awareness about the importance of early diagnosis. Students of Medical Imaging Techniques Program, Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), transformed the not so frequently used x-rays because of digitalization, into various objects such as candleholders, coasters, bookmarks, etc.
SAVE ON HEATING BILL
The energy used for heating with the arrival of cold weather is increasing remarkably. Based on the data by Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Turkey has consumed 278.4 billion kilowatt-hours electricity in 2016. It increased up to 4.7% compared to the former year and reached 176.1 billion kilowatt-hours by the end of July. The experts are suggesting ways for providing thermal insulation to maintain the indoor heat.
HONORARY AWARD TO “WOMAN” EXPRESSED BY FELT IN URUGUAY
Prof. Dr. Elvan Özkavruk Adanır, Head of Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), and Dr. Jovita Sakalauskaite, Lecturer from the same department, won an honorary award at the 7th WTA International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art that took place at Montevideo, Uruguay. Artists from 75 countries attended the biennial.

Students of Departments of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, and Industrial Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), reinterpreted furniture designs of Italian Designer Enzo Mari. Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, viewed the furniture being used at various locations on campus.
E-BOOK TO BRING INNOVATION TO THE WORLD OF TRANSLATION
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Şahin, Lecturer, Department of Translation and Interpretation, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), is preparing an e-book full of animations, visuals, videos with the intent of allowing translation and interpretation students to receive education based on equal opportunity.
EDUCATION COLLABORATION BETWEEN PAKISTAN and TURKEY
Protocol of collaboration was signed between Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and the Superior Group of Colleges (SGC), a chain of colleges and Universities with more than one hundred campuses across Pakistan. Cahit Yaşar Eren, Member of IUE Board of Trustees and Honorary Consul of Pakistan in Izmir, Prof. Dr. Can Şimga Muğan, IUE Rector, and Prof. Chaudhry Abdul Rehman, Chairman of the Superior Group, signed the protocol.
DO NOT USE TECHNOLOGY AS A BABY SITTER!
Parents are using mobile phones, tablets as “baby sitters”. Exposure to cyber world results in increased violence, consumption, neglect, abuse cases, studies show. The report by Ministry of Family and Social Policies’ “Workshop on Assessment of Protection and Prevention Policies Regarding Children in Turkey” states that children, as young as age 2, have access to internet, and warns parents about taking precautions against social media that includes neglect, abuse thematic content.
CREATING VALUE FOR PRODUCTS
Turkish Patent and Trademark Office has authorized Izmir University of Economics (IUE) in generating higher value-added products via R&D studies. The TURKPATENT- Turkish Patent Information and Documentation Unit has been established within the University. The Unit, authorized by Turkish Patent and Trademark Office and supported by IUE Embyroniks Technology Transfer Office, will be supporting the invention owners as well as providing training.
MASKS GOT COLORFUL!
Masks just got colorful in order to raise awareness about leukemia. Students of Child Development Program, Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), started an awareness campaign titled, “Look At Me, Not My Mask” as part of the “Leukemia Awareness Week” (November 2-8). Students drew pictures of sky, sea, fish, and stars on the masks, got their selfies taken, and posted them on social media.
