WE PREFER TO “VISIT” ON HOLIDAYS
We prefer “visiting relatives” on our holidays or travels. Based on the data by Turkish Statistical Institute (TSI), primary purpose of trip was “visiting relatives” with 72.1% in the first quarter of 2017. The secondary purpose of trip was “health” with 10% and the third was “travel, leisure, holiday” with 8.5%.
A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS
The fact that use of words related to environment, nature, and plants was minimized when being translated into Turkish in classics of children's literature such as the “Coral Island”, “Treasure Island”, “Black Beauty”, etc. has been identified with a method developed by experts. A measuring device, capable of measuring the transfer of knowledge and attitude in translations and comparing the original texts and translated texts, was developed within the TUBITAK funded project coordinated by Prof. Dr. Neslihan Kansu Yetkiner, Lecturer, Department of Translation and Interpretation, Izmir University of Economics (IUE). The device will be used in an international project in order to measure the transfer of environmental literacy among other languages.
IUE CHEFS’ EXPERIENCE IN FRANCE
IUE young chefs, who are learning about the Aegean and Turkish cuisine finesse, are also experiencing the details of world cuisine in France. Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Culinary Arts and Management are performing their internship in France as part of the agreement with Les Toques Blanches Lyonnaises established by world famous chefs of France. 16 IUE prospective chefs are learning the art of cuisine at Michelin Starred restaurants from the world famous chefs in Lyon, France.
APRONS BECOME ARTISTIC
Chefs, cafe workers, baristas, as well as artists will be wearing designer aprons. Nihan Çakıroğlu Erküçük, Graduate of Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), reports that she designs more than an apron, rather a custom design “new generation assistant”.
IZMIR-CHINA FRIENDSHIP BRIDGE
Second foreign language education offered at Izmir University of Economics (IUE) is opening new horizons for students. Remziye Özge Özge, sophomore student at IUE Department of Interpretation and Translation, who is taking Chinese as a second foreign language, has been invited to the “2nd Asian-African Youth Festival” to be held in China. Özge will be representing Izmir at the festival that will be held in the cities of Beijing and Xi.
GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ALUMNI GOT TOGETHER
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Graduate School of Business held “IUE MBA Reunion”. Julia Akertek, Training Specialist from Linklaters LLP, a Frankfurt-based law firm, conducted a seminar on innovative performance management at the event organized with the purpose of bringing graduates of MBA program together and strengthening the communication network between the students.
IZMIR GETS ANOTHER FIRST PRIZE IN FASHION
Izmir fashion designers have become famous in European fashion. Dilara Karaca, Graduate of Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), came in first place with her design at the contest held at “SVP London Fashion Trade Show” in England. Karaca, who represented Turkey in England, also received scholarship for a training course at Fashion Enter, portfolio assessment, and £750 cash prize.
IUE STUDENTS’ DESIGN SHOWERED WITH AWARDS
Urban design of young architects of Izmir University of Economics has been showered with awards in England. Students of Department of Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), created a “pop up city” themed design which received the most and the least number of tweets in London at the “FabFest” design festival hosted by University of Westminster in London. The design was given an award in the category of “Hawthorn impressive design”. Students, who also received Hawthorn money award, received a third prize in the best architectural design category selected by the jury members.
IUE SCHOOL OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES IS LIKE A LANGUAGE SCHOOL FROM LONDON
Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) School of Foreign Languages (SFL), which is equipped with smart classes and serves more than one thousand 500 students, speak only English. Even the waiter at the cafe located within the building, is taking orders in English.
IUE AT CERN
Izmir will be represented at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) by scientists from Izmir University of Economics (IUE). Scientists from Izmir with a team from Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Arts and Science, Department of Physics, which will be admitting students for the first time this year, will take part in scientific studies at CERN.
