AEGEAN FLAVOURS BY IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS CHEFS
Local tastes of Aegean Region were the highlight of the 3rd International Gastronomic Tourism Congress. The Congress, under auspices of Ministry of Culture and Tourism, was co-organized by Izmir Fair Services Culture and Art Affairs (IZFAŞ), Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TURSAB), Dokuz Eylül University, and Izmir University of Economics (IUE). Local tastes of Aegean Region turned into a tasty feast at the Congress held at Fuar Izmir.
POWER OF COMMUNICATION
Department of Public Relations and Advertising, Faculty of Communication, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) held the “1st Integrated Communications Day”. The outline of the event stressed that one way communication, when it came to branding was not enough anymore and what consumers and employees had to say became powerful nowadays.
MULTI-FACETED TRANSLATORS OF THE REPUBLICAN ERA
Senior students of Department of Translation and Interpretation, Faculty of Arts and Science, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) studied the multi-faceted translators of the Republican Era. The students organized a poster exhibition where they addressed the lives and professional developments of many multi-faceted translators such as Sabahattin Eyüboğlu, Nazım Hikmet, Yaşar Nabi Nayır, Talat Sait Halman, Cemal Süreya, Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil, Mina Urgan, Sabahattin Ali.
STREET FOOD BECOMING MORE DELICIOUS
Street food is becoming more delicious in the hands of Chef Muzaffer Özdamar. Graduate of Department of Culinary Arts and Management, Izmir University of Economics, Özdamar, who created his own brand, ‘Snakk Street Food’, prepares delicious, healthy, and hygienic food.
IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS RECEIVED THE ‘BEST EDUCATION BUILDING’ AWARD
The new building of School of Foreign Languages of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), which is equipped with high-tech smart classrooms for students, received the “Best Education Building” award at the “Sign of The City Awards 2017” contest. The building design also became a finalist in the category of “Best Architectural Design Building” at the contest organized under the leadership of Hürriyet and project sponsorship of Lineadecor. Building of School of Foreign Languages has previously been awarded the Silver A' Design Award in Italy in the category of Architecture, Building and Structure Design by the grand jury panel of the A’ Design Award & Competition which consists of internationally influential press members, established designers, leading academics and prominent entrepreneurs.
GOT INSPIRED BY HIS GRANDPARENTS
As Turkey’s population is getting older, it is bringing along new entrepreneurship stories. According to data by Turkish Statistical Institute, the elderly population in Turkey reached 8.3% in 2016. While 6 million 651 thousand 503 people are regarded as elderly, number of nursing homes, retirement homes fail to satisfy the needs. Alphan Çelikel, Graduate of Department of Computer Engineering, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), chose to look after the “elders” in his homeland and offer them a new life style so that they can spend time with their age group and live a healthy life. Çelikel founded the healthy living and healthy aging center in Mordoğan for his grandfather Kani Çelikel and for other elderly.
TELEVISION AND THE INTERNET: IMPORTANT SOURCES OF INFORMATION ON AIDS FOR YOUTH
Young people learn about HIV/AIDS from the internet and TV. Based on the survey conducted by students of Faculty of Medicine, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) among 350 young people, 87% of the participants reported that they learn information from the internet, 40% from the TV, and 39% at school. In addition, 75.4% of the participants reported that the disease affected the immune system, 95.9% stated that unprotected sex was one of the main reasons of the contamination, and 92.3% stated that it was transmitted through blood.
‘PREPARE FOR LIFE AFTER GRADUATION’
Economist Mahfi Eğilmez, who was invited by Department of International Trade and Finance, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) as the guest speaker, stated that youth unemployment rate in Turkey increased to 20%, and recommended that youth should get well prepared for life after graduation. Eğilmez delivered a speech at the “Economic Outlook: Turkey and the World” titled conference that took place at IUE Conference Hall. He addressed the youth, “Do not be contended with what you learn at your department. Definitely learn accounting, law, and economics. Read about books on economy regardless of your major. Complement your major with minor courses”.
IZMIR’S NEW MISSION IN WORLD DESIGN
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Osman Demirbaş, Lecturer, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), will be representing Turkey at the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI). At the 28th General Assembly of the Federation in Lagos, Nigeria, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Demirbaş has been assigned as the Professional Ambassador representing Europe.
FESTIVE FELT WORKSHOP
As the year draws to a close, people get festive about new year. Youth with Down syndrome made their own felt ornaments for New Year at the Felt Workshop co-organized by Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), and Child Development Program of IUE Vocational School of Health Services in collaboration with Izmir Down Syndrome Association. The ornaments included pine trees, necklaces, baskets, gingerbread men, etc. The ornaments are on sale at the ‘İyilik Atölyesi’ (Down Cafe) located at Mavibahçe Shopping Mall.
