THE ROLE OF COFFEE IN SOCIALIZATION
The Turkish saying, ‘Bir fincan kahvenin kırk yıl hatırı vardır (A cup coffee starts the friendship of 40 years)’ is verified by 3rd generation coffee lovers. In her research on daily coffee consumption habits, Ekin Dorak, student at Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, found out that 60% of the customers viewed 3rd generation coffee houses as a social atmosphere, and that more than one cup of coffee was consumed throughout the day.
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STRETCHING FROM IZMIR TO LONDON
Young IUE architects are going to display their urban design, they based over tweets, in England. Students of Department of Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics will be representing Izmir at the “pop up city” themed design festival hosted by University of Westminster in London.
AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT GRADUATE EDUCATION
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) held “Graduate Student Advising” titled workshop. The workshop, co-organized by IUE Graduate Schools of Social Sciences, Natural and Applied Sciences, Business, and Health Sciences, focused on graduate student-advisor communication. IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Can Şımga Muğan, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, 71 academicians from graduate schools and faculties, and graduate school students attended the workshop.
ARCHITECTS THAT STEER FLOATING LIFE
IUE architects gave a new direction to architecture through the theme “flow”. Senior projects of students of Department of Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design; Izmir University of Economics (IUE) equipped Basmane and Karaçam Village, Bornova with social living environment. They also came up with new designs on the effects multi story buildings on urban life.
CHILDREN'S LITERATURE IN TRANSLATION
Department of Translation and Interpretation, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) hosted a panel titled, “An Ecocritical Approach to Children's Literature and Translations”. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Necdet Neydim, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuz Özdemir, Asst. Prof. Dr. Banu Akçeşme, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Önder Çetin delivered presentations on children’s literature, ecological literacy training for children, ecocriticism in Turkey and worldwide, and representation of environment in English text books in the first session of the panel.
OVERCOMING DISABILITIES WITH TANGO
Students with special education needs performed tango with the support of students of Child Development Program, Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and students of Care and Rehabilitation for Disabled People Program of Atatürk Vocational School of Health Services, Ege University.
PRODUCTIVE WOMAN IS A “HAPPY” WOMAN
Producing woman is happier and more self-confident. IUE sociologists, who researched about producing women in Seferihisar local markets, found out that there was a significant increase in the life standard of women and many of them stopped taking anti-depressants after they started working.
REPORT CARD; A TOOL TO IMPROVE
17 million 553 thousand 661 students in pre-schools, primary schools, and secondary schools are going to receive their report cards on June 9. As students are excited about beginning their summer break, the experts state that report card is a good source for children in terms of informing them about areas that need to be improved. Ezgi Oral, Lecturer at IUE Vocational School of Health Services, Child Development Program, stated that report card reflected the performance of the student all throughout the year, and that was an indicator of a child’s output of academic development, not his/her personality.
‘BANKING OPERATIONS BROADLY EXPANDED’
The seminar titled, “Finance Talks-4”, organized by Department of International Trade and Finance, Faculty of Business, Izmir University of Economics welcomed Fuat Erbil, CEO of Garanti Bank, as a guest speaker. Erbil gave information about Turkish banking system and its main activities, and he stated that banking was one of the industries to have offered best opportunities to those who want to become leaders in their careers.
