CHILD DEVELOPMENT THROUGH PLAY
Children recognize self, nature, other humans, and objects through play. Hakan Yıldız, Lecturer at Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics, pointed that play, which was a major part of a child’s life, had a significant role in shaping the child’s future.
HOPING FOR A LEGISLATION
Translators are asking for legislation. Even though there are more than a thousand translation offices in Turkey, anyone who can speak a foreign language works as a translator due to lack of a legislation that recognizes the profession. So the only hope is to create awareness about the significance of the issue by university graduate translators.
INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION AT IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) is standing out with its international students in its 15th year. IUE, which has agreements with 156 universities- 23 of which are from European Union countries-is hosting 80 Erasmus students this semester. Izmir University of Economics, a leading name in education with medium of instruction in English and with its smart classrooms, educated 537 foreign national students up until now.
‘ONE MAN’S TRASH IS ANOTHER MAN’S TREASURE’
The species of mushroom the Europe is seeking are getting stepped on in Belgrad Forest in Turkey. Jilber Barutçiyan, the only mycologist (a botanist who specializes in the study of fungi) of Turkey, reported that there were approximately 15 thousand species of mushroom in Turkey and due to lack of knowledge, the most expensive species of mushroom (worth of 3 thousand Euros) was treated like dirt.
‘WASHING HANDS SAVES LIVES’
Every year 6.6 million children die of infections such as diarrhea and pneumonia before they reach the age of 5. The experts strongly believe this disastrous fact can be rectified by adopting the simple habit of washing their hands with soap. Dr. Dilşen Oktay, Lecturer, IUE Department of Food Engineering, stated that washing hands frequently was an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.
NEW DESIGNS FOR MENEMEN POTTERY
Menemen pottery is making an international debut through design. New generation of pottery designs, co-developed by Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Industrial Design, and Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw, are being displayed at Izmir Chamber of Commerce Exhibition Hall. Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, and Chairman of the Executive Board of Izmir Chamber of Commerce, pointed that new designs of Menemen pottery needed to be commercialized at once, and announced that they would designate one of the stores they rented under Kemeraltı Başdurak Camii (Mosque) to sell the potteries.
A RISE IN SUICIDES
As Turkey is experiencing increase in suicide cases in the last 50 years, the experts are basing it on the lower education and income levels. Prof. Dr. Erol Kahveci, Head of IUE Department of Sociology, said, "4 out of every one hundred people are committing suicide in today’s Turkey. While crude suicide rate representing the number of suicides per hundred thousand populations was 4.27 per hundred thousand in 2013, it was 3.97 per hundred thousand in 2014. However, this decrease does not change the direction of the increasing suicide curve. The number of suicides resulting in death was 3 thousand 65 according to official statistics."
SMART BUILDING FOR SMART EDUCATION
Izmir University of Economics (IUE), in which medium of instruction is English, started to serve its students at the new building of School of Foreign Languages equipped with smart classrooms. The building, designed by academicians of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, is equipped with interactive projectors, all-in-one PC’s, microphones, and smart boards.
DESIGN GIVES LIFE TO CERAMICS
Mulled wine is getting warmer. Ceren Cengiz, Graduate of Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics, came up with practical solutions for mulled wine lovers with her “Phyre Mulled Wine Kit” titled design. Cengiz, who received awards at National Packaging Design Student Competition and International World Design Competition, will be displaying her Phyre Mulled Wine Kit. Cengiz will be using some of the proceeds to offer design and ceramics education for children.
