Turkish and Japanese industrial design students are designing very unique, interesting and environmentalist marine transportation vehicles where you can watch movies and have rich underwater scenery. Students are designing future marine transportation vehicles by taking the city’s historical and natural texture into consideration as part of the “Transportation for Izmir- Design Workshops- Merutemu” titled workshop co-organized by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and Shizouka University of Art and Culture. Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, and Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen, IUE Rector, attended the workshops in which students aim to increase the tourism potential of the city.
 

In Turkey most traffic accidents occur when people go on holidays. Based on Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) data, accidents most frequently occurred in August with 10.8% share whereas accidents least frequently occurred in February with 6% share. Regarding the distribution among the days of the week, accidents involving death or injury most frequently occurred on Fridays with 14.8% share, and least frequently on Tuesdays with 13.7% share. In Turkey 168 thousand 512 traffic accidents involving death or injury occurred. 3 thousand 524 persons were killed and 285 thousand 59 persons were injured. The experts pointed out the increase in accidents during holiday periods, and indicated that inappropriate first aid resulted in death or injury.
 

Software developed by Burak Yanığlı, a sophomore at IUE Department of Software Engineering, will identify the diseases in animals. Diseases, causing animals breeders to lose a herd, will be prevented before they begin. Thanks to a leash put on cattle, its fever, pulse, data obtained through its movements will be collected by sensors, and transmitted to the center. Animals with a potential disease will be identified and a vet will intervene immediately.
 

Sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical exercise are an open invitation for cardiovascular diseases, obesity, colon and breast cancers, high blood pressure, stroke, and etc. The experts point out the importance of exercising regularly about 60 minutes a day for kids, and 150 minutes a week for adults.  
 

Schooling and literacy rate in Turkey, with a population of more than 77 million, reaches up to 96.5% based on Turkish Statistics Institute (TUIK) data, but there are 2 million 663 thousand people who cannot read and write. Unfortunately, women make up 83% (2 million 208 thousand 336) of that number. Worldwide there are 771 million illiterate adults and females with 64% population fall behind again.
 

As Turkey is one of the leading countries in milk production, it falls behind many European countries and America when it comes to consumption with 24 liters per person. Milk production was 570 million tons worldwide in 2014 and 19 million tons in Turkey. America took the lead with 92.7 liters of milk consumption per person and Europe followed with 67.4 liters. The experts emphasize that milk, the natural first food for babies, should be consumed by all ages, and milk consumption should increase for healthier generations.   
 

It has been stated that economic stagnation in Turkey was visibly felt, that the citizens put the “brakes” on expenses, and offering flexible terms on personal loans would increase the demand in the economy. The experts, based on Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM) statistics, remarked that the exports in August dropped down by 4.9% compared to last August, and reached 10 billion 482 million 987 thousand dollars, and that growth was the most significant remedy for stagnation and therefore, decision makers needed to act in the direction of boosting the economy.
 

It has been stated that people with learning disabilities worldwide was 8% and that early diagnosis and proper treatment brought academic success. The experts reported that more research was required on the subject and in the event of unidentified learning disabilities such as dyslexia (reading and related language-based processing skills), dysgraphia (handwriting ability and fine motor skills), and  dyscalculia (ability to understand numbers and learn math facts), children get cold feet about going to school.  
 

Turkey’s first domestic 3 D printer is being displayed at the International Izmir Fair. It has been estimated that 3 D printers, which are thought to become widespread by 2020 with 35% annual growth capacity worldwide, will take part in all aspects of life. The 3 dimensional printer, “Bigg”, produced by Tesla Teknik-one of the first companies of Izmir Bilimpark (IUE techno park)-under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, IUE Vice Rector, will allow any size prints out by deducting half of the cost.  Various designs such as folding electric bike, smart feeding cups for pets, blood pressure monitor created by students which are displayed at IUE booth at the fair, drew great attention of the guests.
 

Firdevs Tülin Gülhan, graduate of Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Fashion and Textile Design, who came in first place at IF Wedding 2014 Wedding Gowns Design Competition, will continue her academic career with a scholarship at De Montfort University, England.
