SAFETY OF NURSES
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Öğçe, IUE Faculty of Health Sciences, Head of Department of Nursing, and President of Turkish Perioperative Nurses Association, pointed out that nurses were exposed to injuries caused by sharp objects. Öğçe stated that European Perioperative Nurses Day would be celebrated this year on February 18 at Izmir University of Economics Conference Hall with a scientific and social themed meeting, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Dilek Çakır Umar, Vice President of the Association, Prof. Dr. Meryem Yavuz, Head of Perioperative Nursing of Ege University, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Özlem Yıldırım would be delivering opening speeches at this special event.
TURKISH SILK MADE IT TO INDIA
The story of Turkish silk that had to compete against Chinese silk for many years was mentioned in India. Prof. Dr. Elvan Özkavruk Adanır, Head of IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design talked about silkworm breeding and silk weaving in Turkey; and held an exhibition of attires made of silk and felt where she used traditional Turkish art patterns in India.
WALNUT: BRAIN AND HEARTH HEALTHY FOOD
Research shows walnut consumption boosts memory, perception, and neural effects, and has positive benefits on students. Prof. Dr. Nazan Turhan, Head of IUE Department of Food Engineering, emphasized the importance of consuming walnuts in terms of brain and heart health.
MUGLA-IZMIR SHOOK HANDS FOR THE YOUTH
Bülent Karakuş, Chairman of Executive Board of Muğla Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MUTSO), and Ekrem Demirtaş, Chairman of Executive Board of Izmir Chamber of Commerce and President of IUE Board of Trustees, signed a protocol in Muğla for a bright future of Muğla youth. First degree blood relatives of members of Muğla Chamber of Commerce and Industry and District Chambers qualified for 15% discount in annual tuition fees of Izmir University of Economics as part of the protocol.
IUE CONFERS HONORARY DOCTORATE TO BARTHOLOMEW I
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, the Orthodox Patriarch of the Phanar, was awarded the degree of “Doctor Honoris Causa (Dr.hc)” in “Sociology” by the Senate of Izmir University of Economics for his contributions and service to society and humanity; and for improving inter-faith dialogue.
HISTORICAL STUDY ON TURKISH FURNITURE
Historical Turkish furniture covering the period of 1920 – 1980 is restored. 68 pieces of furniture, which are explored by the lecturers at IUE Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, as part of the ‘Documentation and Archiving- Modern Furniture’ in Turkey’ titled project, are being exhibited at Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Ahmet Adnan Saygun Art Centre.
IUE EXHIBITION IN RUSSIA
Toys, hats, and figurines from waste materials and costumes from rags created by lecturers of Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design are being exhibited in Russia. “Steampunk: Retro Future Exhibition” titled exhibition, which was admired by many in Izmir, is welcoming Russian art lovers in Open Gallery in Moscow. The exhibition, which attracted great attention, will stay open until the end of February. The Russians asked this design of old goods to be a permanent exhibition.
INTERCULTURAL SHOPPING HABITS
Different cultural influences are reflected in shopping. The study reveals that Turks go shopping without a shopping list and buy whatever they like whereas Germans go on a more planned shopping. The survey titled, “Consumer Logistics in Turkey” which is co-conducted by Izmir University of Economics, Department of Logistics and University of Bremen, Department of Logistics, compared the shopping habits of the two countries. According to the survey, Turks do impulse buying while Germans make a shopping list and stick to that list.
A RAINBOW OF PLASTIC BOTTLES
Plastic bottles, which are considered environmental wastes and have negative impact on human health, have been turned into a rainbow by Gökhan Keskin, Graduate Student in IUE Design Studies Program. Keskin, with his project developed as part of Ethics and Social Responsibility in Design course, wanted to show reaction to plastic bottles ending up in oceans, natural habitats and landfills by creating a rainbow using them.

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Sustainable Energy has been accepted to membership of European Energy Research Alliance – EERA in collaboration with TUBITAK. Izmir University of Economics will be working to establish collaboration with research institutions and industry at the alliance where Turkey was represented by only METU before.
