IZMIR SHOULD COME TO THE FORE IN LOGISTICS SECTOR
It has been indicated that logistics sector in Turkey was the second sector with the most potential after tourism sector, and that the market would reach between $120-150 billion in 2015. It has been reported that the logistics sector, which is also the main theme of 83rd Izmir International Fair, has made a significant progress in Turkey in the last 10 years.
BIKES FOR IZMIR FROM JAPAN
Turkish and Japanese students designed electric bicycles for Izmir. Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and Shizuoka University of Art and Culture (SUAC) Department of Industrial Design students designed electric bicycles for different uses by tourists, stallholders, garbage collectors, and university students. Students of IUE, whose travel to Japan funded by Izmir Chamber of Commerce Education and Health Foundation, were offered to perform their internships at Suzuki in the coming semesters.
PHYSICAL THERAPY WITH COMPUTER GAMES
Physical therapy will become less of a burden and be more fun with computer games. Rehabilitation exercises became more motivating for patients in the computer game developed by Asst. Prof. Dr. Gazihan Alankuş, Lecturer at IUE Department of Computer Engineering. Patients earn points as they do their exercises.
BIKES ARE SAFE WITH “WOODY”
Bicycles will become part of house decorations and be safe at the same time. With more and more people using bikes nationwide, thefts started to increase which motivated designers to come up with smart solutions. Can Geren, graduate of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Industrial Design, designed a bike hanging rack called ‘Woody’ for indoors. Bicycles will no longer be left in front of buildings or in balconies, and will be protected against burglars.
HEALTH MEETS WITH MANAGEMENT AT IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS!
Education regarding health institutions management is being reshaped at Izmir University of Economics. IUE Graduate School of Social Sciences Health Institutions Management Graduate Program, which will be admitting its first students, will also help students from different disciplines to get a new career. The informative meeting will take place on August 19, and the deadline for applications is August 29.

Zeynep Mayruk, Graduate of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Fashion and Textile Design, is shaping the fashion with the beach apparel she designs. Mayruk sells her lacy designs at the store within Alaçatı Before Sunset Beach Club and adds new dimension to the competition of elegance on the beaches.
BUILDING INSPECTIONS ARE NOT SUFFICIENT
As Turkey witnessed the deaths of its 18 thousand citizens in the Marmara Earthquake on August 17, 1999, the experts stated that building inspections, in the 15 years since the tragedy, were not done properly. Based on the official records, 18 thousand people have lost their lives, another 23 thousand got wounded, 135 thousand buildings have collapsed, and 600 thousand people were left homeless in that earthquake. Concerns about building stock in Turkey continued, and it has been indicated that construction companies needed to stop selecting the inspection companies on their own.
A BREATH OF FRESH AIR TO CENTURY OLD THEOREM FROM IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
Lecturers of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Mathematics will be studying the features of a new module in invariant theory with a TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) Project they developed. Asst. Prof. Dr. Uğur Madran and his Ph.D. student Deniz Erdemirci Erkuş prepared a project in order to develop a larger model that will include special cases not covered by the theory, and will bring a different point of view to the theory which will ease the coding theory used in wireless communication. The study, which is granted 61 thousand Turkish Liras by Mathematics, Physics Research Support Group within TUBITAK, will last for 18 months.
