ZUMBA FOR SOMA
2014 – 2015 ROTARY 7th Group Spouses Committee supported Soma State Hospital Burn Unit Establishment Project by “Rotary Fall Festival” they held at Izmir University of Economics (IUE). The Zumba Show led by trainer Nursen Akat and performances of IUE Rhythm Club took place at IUE Conference Hall in order to raise funds for 2440th Rotary District Project.
BODY IMAGE IS IMPORTANT FOR YOUNG MALES
Young males prefer to shape their bodies with sports and food supplements in order to look more muscular. Asst. Prof. Dr. Olga Selin Ünler, Lecturer at IUE Department of Psychology, conducted a body image study where 349 young males between the ages of 17 – 27 participated, and the study revealed that the youth desired to look more muscular. 61% of the participants stated that they went to the gym on a regular basis, 40% wanted to lose weight, and 15% wanted to gain weight therefore took food supplements.
‘I WILL KEEP ON SPONSORING STUDENTS’
Fashion Designer Barbaros Şansal, who identifies himself as ‘Tailor’s Apprentice’, stated that students who are needy and staying at dormitories are in need of underwear the most, clothing is provided somehow but different needs of students should not be overlooked.

“The Great Meltdown of 2008: Systematic, Conjunctural, or Policy-Created?” titled conference that was organized by Izmir University of Economics, Department of Economics brought together many economists from all around the world. Prof. Dr. Turan Subaşat, Lecturer at IUE Department of Economics, David Harvey, recognized social theorist, economists John Weeks, Jan Toporowski, David Kotz, Alan Freeman, Simon Mohun, Stavros Mavroudeas, Anwar Shaikh, Al Campbell, Erdoğan Bakır, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Orhangazi from Kadir Has University, and Riccardo Bellofiore, Ben Fine, and Radhika Desai attended the conference where the origins of the current global crisis were discussed.
60’S ARE BACK
This winter will be a colourful one with new fashion trends. Furs, capes, feathers and shearling are among this season’s collection with a touch of sixties. Özge Dikkaya Göknur, Lecturer at Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Arts and Design, Department of Fashion and Textile Design, stated that clean lines, cocoon silhouettes were prominent in 2014/2015 winter fashion shows that took place at fashion capitals as Paris New York, London, etc. She said that this season’s theme was wrapping up against the cold.
‘REBORN; THANKS TO SOCIAL MEDIA’
Singer Atilla Taş, who is known for his ironic remarks in social media, stated that he was able to create his own media through his comments in this area. Taş, who was a guest speaker at the 2nd Media Days co-organized by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Media Club and Media and Communications Association, pointed that he was reborn from his ashes with the help of social media.
PATIENTS WITH EPILEPSY DISGUISE THEMSELVES
Patients with epilepsy in Turkey prefer to disguise themselves. The “Stigmatization, Concerns Regarding Epilepsy and Overprotectiveness in Turkish Patients with Epilepsy” titled study, conducted by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Psychology, revealed that the patients with epilepsy kept quiet about their condition and that they felt embarrassed about it.
TIME TO WORK NOW!
The experts state that after a long holiday and the summer coming to an end, there may be back to work adjustment problems and it would be best to increase the motivation. Clinical Psychologist Nilgün Köstem, Coordinator of IUE Psychological Development and Counselling Centre, indicated that especially the first weeks after the holidays were the toughest times to get back to work and responsibilities. Köstem said, “We need to be highly motivated for a prosperous and successful work life."
SYMPOSIUM FOR ACCESSIBLE TRANSPORTATION
Handicaps on passenger boats have been a debate issue at Izmir University of Economics. “Accessibility for All in Passenger Boats” titled symposium was held with the collaborations of Izmir University of Economics, Dokuz Eylül University, Union Of Chambers Of Turkish Engineers And Architects- Chamber of Marine Engineers Izmir Branch, and supports of Izmir Chamber of Commerce, IMEAK Chamber of Marine Commerce Izmir Branch, and Izmir Metropolitan Municipality İZDENİZ A.Ş.
UNIVERSITY STUDENTS KEEP EACH OTHER INFORMED
University students get in touch with each other through an online platform they established. Umut Emre Çınar and Batum Kundak, Students of IUE Faculty of Communication, Department of Media and Communication, are informing students about activities and events going on at other universities via their website called “uniquekampus.com”. The website covers news about seminars, activities, events, organizations, festivals taking place at other university campuses and also allows students to share their opinions.
