CONSTRAINTS ON CREDIT CARDS ARE NOT EFFECTIVE
It has been stated that constraints on credit card usages did not structurally change the spending frequency and amount. The experts said that legal changes have been made in four different periods, and lastly, starting from 1 February 2014, the number of instalment payments was limited to 9 months and even that did not change the spending habits of citizens. The study titled, “Are the Constraints on Credit Cards Effective?” conducted by Prof. Dr. Hakan Yetkiner, Vice Dean of IUE Faculty of Business and Dilara Kılınç, Ph.D. Student of Department of Economics, indicated that credit card use increased despite the restraints.
WOMEN INVOLVEMENT IN POLITICS IS THE ANSWER
It has been emphasized that women needed to get involved in politics in order to get their voices heard regarding their pain, joy, expectations, etc. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Kentmen Çin, Lecturer at IUE Department of Political Science and International Relations, who has a study titled, “Political Involvement in Turkey and Differences Between Males and Females in Political Interest”, stated that women made up one half of the population in Turkey but stayed away from politics.
THE HIDDEN HISTORY OF BRIDAL GOWNS KEPT IN CHESTS ARE REVEALED
The history of the purest white, the wedding gowns, is springing back to life in the hands of lecturers of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Fashion and Textile Design. The studies, on identifying the fashion trends in Turkey starting from 1920’s and developing a history in this area in Izmir which is prominent in bridal gown sector, were presented at the 6th Fashion Week that took place at Oxford University, England. Prof. Dr. Elvan Özkavruk Adanır, Head of IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design, and Lecturers Özge Dikkaya Göknur and Seda Kuleli stated that they were interested in the old bridal gowns being kept at chests at homes of people who would be willing to support the history of Turkish bridal gowns.
IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS STARTED ITS 14TH ACADEMIC YEAR
Izmir University of Economics is excited about starting off 2014 – 2015 Academic Year with its new students. IUE opened its doors for the 14th time to make its students take their first steps towards their careers. The first ceremony of the new academic year started with laying a wreath at Ataturk Monument at Cumhuriyet Square. Ekrem Demirtaş, IUE President of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen, IUE Rector, academicians, graduates and students observed a moment of silence. Singing the National Anthem was followed by laying a wreath at Ataturk Monument at Cumhuriyet Square.
TRANSLATION AND TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATED’
Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Department of English Translation and Interpreting, celebrated September 30th International Translation Day and the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of the department with “Translation and Technology Panel”. Prof. Dr. Lütfiye Oktar, Head of IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting, delivered the opening speech of the event that took place at IUE Conference Hall where representatives of Izmir Translation Students Platform also expressed their opinions.

It has been pointed out that 15% of the population in Turkey were below the at-risk-of-poverty threshold and that living conditions would only get worse due to low income. Based on the Income and Living Conditions Survey, 2013 by Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), there is a 8 times difference between the 20% population that has the highest income rate and the 20% population that has the lowest income rate. It has been reported that Turkey needed to support its middle class and that it would contribute to a steady development and healthy economic growth.
NUMBER OF ADDICTED CHILDREN IS INCREASING!
It has been emphasized that children, with the new school year ahead, have been target group on issues such as juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, and some 273 thousand 571 children reached out to the security units in 2013. The experts pointed out the data of TUIK on “Children Came or Brought to the Security Units” was remarkable, and 16 million 400 thousand students started school and due to Turkey’s young population, school and its surroundings became a high risk target area for drug smugglers.
FLOATING DOCK BY IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
The floating dock, which was designed as a proposal to diversify the use of coastlines of Turkey, made a debut today in Pasaport, Izmir. The dock, which was designed by Gudjon Erlendsson, Can Sucuoğlu, and Elif Ensari, Lecturers at Izmir University of Economics-Department of Architecture and Ertunç Hünkar, Graduate of Izmir University of Economics-Department of Architecture, with the support of Izmir Chamber of Commerce, will be on display at 2nd Istanbul Design and Architecture Biennial organized by Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) after being displayed in Izmir.

Getting engaged in sports activities night-time became more safe thanks to IUE students’ design. Merve Sünnetçioğlu and İlkay Sarıkaya, Students of IUE Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, made people doing sports more visible with the “led” system attached on sportswear.
