Menemen pottery is making an international debut through design. New generation of pottery designs, co-developed by Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Industrial Design, and Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw, are being displayed at Izmir Chamber of Commerce Exhibition Hall.  Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees, and Chairman of the Executive Board of Izmir Chamber of Commerce, pointed that new designs of Menemen pottery needed to be commercialized at once, and announced that they would designate one of the stores they rented under Kemeraltı Başdurak Camii (Mosque) to sell the potteries.  
 

As Turkey is experiencing increase in suicide cases in the last 50 years, the experts are basing it on the lower education and income levels. Prof. Dr. Erol Kahveci, Head of IUE Department of Sociology, said, "4 out of every one hundred people are committing suicide in today’s Turkey. While crude suicide rate representing the number of suicides per hundred thousand populations was 4.27 per hundred thousand in 2013, it was 3.97 per hundred thousand in 2014. However, this decrease does not change the direction of the increasing suicide curve. The number of suicides resulting in death was 3 thousand 65 according to official statistics."
 

Izmir University of Economics (IUE), in which medium of instruction is English, started to serve its students at the new building of School of Foreign Languages equipped with smart classrooms. The building, designed by academicians of IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, is equipped with interactive projectors, all-in-one PC’s, microphones, and smart boards. 
 

Mulled wine is getting warmer. Ceren Cengiz, Graduate of Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics, came up with practical solutions for mulled wine lovers with her “Phyre Mulled Wine Kit” titled design. Cengiz, who received awards at National Packaging Design Student Competition and International World Design Competition, will be displaying her Phyre Mulled Wine Kit. Cengiz will be using some of the proceeds to offer design and ceramics education for children.
 

Izmir University of Economics (IUE) is proud to start off 2015 – 2016 Academic Year with its 8 thousand 354 students. The first ceremony of the new academic year started with laying a wreath at Ataturk Monument at IUE Ceremony Field. Ekrem Demirtaş, IUE President of the Board of Trustees, Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen, IUE Rector, academicians, graduates and students observed a moment of silence. Singing the National Anthem was followed by laying a wreath at Ataturk Monument.
 

Prof. Dr. Hakan Yetkiner, Lecturer at Department of Economics, Izmir University of Economics, stated that Izmir was below the country average in income distribution, and needed social policies and higher income transfer in comparison to Ankara and Istanbul. Prof. Dr. Yetkiner commented on the regional results of Income and Living Conditions Survey, 2014 by Turkish Statistical Institute.   
 

Participants of "Tourİzmir Zirvesi (Summit)", organized by Izmir Chamber of Commerce and supported by Izmir University of Economics (IUE), attended the gala night prepared by the student chefs of IUE Department of Culinary Arts and Management. 65 international tourism association employees, airline managers, tour operators, travel agents, and congress planners from 26 countries toured Izmir University of Economics during the day. Guests were treated samples of Turkish cuisine prepared by junior students of IUE Department of Culinary Arts and Management under the guidance of Chef Trainer Merve Burcu Akbulut. Trainer Chef Asst. Prof. Dr. Pierre Raffard made a presentation on Turkish cuisine while Trainer Chef Işık Gülçubuk presented about Wine Production in Turkey at the event.
 

The shift in season brings along several other changes in environment that creates illnesses. Huriye Vural, Lecturer at Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics, stated that Turkey experienced seasonal transitions more intense and she said, “The immune system gets affected by this and increases the risk of both physical and mental illnesses.”
 

Your child entering the education life for the first time might experience adaptation problems. According to the experts this period should be handled professionally in order not to turn it into a nightmare, and child should be told that going to school is beneficial on his/her development rather than an obligation. Songül Özgün, Lecturer at Child Development Program, Vocational School of Health Services, Izmir University of Economics, pointed that parents’ and teachers’ attitudes and behaviors had a tremendous effect on child’s view about the school, and expressions such as ‘I wish the school would start so I can get a relief’ would cause the child to develop negative thoughts about school.  
 

The experts state that for a healthy heart, which works nonstop to pump blood containing oxygen and nutrients through the blood vessels; people need to lose excess weight, quit smoking, and lead an active life. Based on the statistics, cardiovascular diseases was the top cause of death in Turkey, and 40% death cases were caused by diseases of the circulatory system in 2014.
