'America' scholarship to Izmir academician
Asst. Prof. Deniz Sayar, Lecturer at Department of Industrial Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), who carries out studies on many topics such as the design of smart robots or virtual assistants that will facilitate our daily lives with the help of artificial intelligence, received a research scholarship from the United States. Asst. Prof. Sayar, who has been deemed worthy of the Carnegie Mellon University Fulbright Research Fellowship, awarded to only 12 people in Turkey this year, will complete her studies by leaving for America in February and staying there for 10 months.
We will make '38 million' with electricity
Action was taken to increase energy efficiency, create a suitable ground for renewable energy investment and save 5m euros (38 million lira) in Izmir, where approximately 6 percent of the total consumption of electricity in Turkey takes place. Prof. Mehmet Efe Biresselioğlu, Head of Division of Sustainable Energy, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), was entitled to receive support from the European Union (EU) for a project called "ENCHANT" developed in cooperation with academics from 5 countries in Europe.
2 'recycling' projects by IUE students
Students of Department of Public Relations and Advertising, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) developed two communication campaigns for Karşıyaka Municipality in order to separate domestic solid wastes and direct them to recycling. Young people from Izmir University of Economics, who proposed a tournament called “Bil, Ayrıştır, Kazan (Know, Sort, Win” to raise awareness among high school students, conveyed that the toys made from domestic waste can be presented to Izmir residents in a special exhibition in the project called " Atıkları Kahramanın Yap (Make the Wastes Your Hero)" prepared for primary school students.
“Women's domestic burden is 5 times more than men in Turkey”
Coronavirus also increased the burden of women trying to cope with the intensity and stress of business life at home. According to research, as women in Turkey undertake 5 times more responsibility compared to men in housework and childcare, "acting together" and "sharing chores" recommendations were made to men in order to prevent domestic disputes. Merve Minkari Tunçay, Clinical Psychologist of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), said, “Women give up their personal time, their plans more often. Therefore, they can be quickly exhausted psychologically, physically and mentally. Men should not leave their spouses alone at home especially during the difficult period. Couples should listen to each other, do a division of labor and act with understanding.”
Turkey, will be the world's new power in supply
Its effective fight against the coronavirus epidemic, its proximity to world markets in general, and its supply power in many industries, made Turkey a key country. Assoc. Prof. Bengü Sevil Oflaç, Lecturer, Department of Logistics Management, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), stated that being addicted only to China posed a great risk and many countries and companies clearly saw this during the epidemic. “By making new investments and technological moves, Turkey will become a major player in the global supply chain configurations. Turkey, having advantage of proximity to key markets will become alternative to China with its power supply and quality in many industries,” said Assoc. Prof. Bengü Sevil Oflaç.
Recommendations to companies on reputation
Experts shared recommendations to turn the crisis into an opportunity and increase reputation for companies that are looking for ways to survive the difficult period due to coronavirus with the least losses. Assoc. Prof. Selin Türkel, Head of Department of Public Relations and Advertising, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), listed her recommendations in 8 items and she said, “Firms that make creative contributions to society will gain reputation and strength in the crisis period. Firms should not look opportunistic while doing these, they should create sincerity. If necessary, they should also be open to collaborating with competitors.”
Izmir University of Economics will steer educational technologies
Izmir University of Economics’ (IUE) adapting the technology-supported teaching approach to "distance education" with the goal of "excellence in education" brought success. Dr. Esin Çağlayan, Director of IUE Teaching and Learning Center (TLC), has been appointed as a Member of Blackboard Education Technologies Advisory Board.

Çağdaş Yıldırım, IUE Secretary General, and Emre Öztürk, CFO of Vansan Water Technologies, were guests of the series of webinars titled, “Transformation in Tough Times”, co-organized by Izmir Chamber of Commerce (IZTO) and Faculty of Business, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) to support companies in the difficult period caused by the coronavirus. Yıldırım and Öztürk delivered the “Financial Continuity in a Crisis” titled seminar.
“Impact of Covid-19 outbreak on contracts”
Asst. Prof. Cem Özcan, Lecturer at Department of Civil Law, Faculty of Law, and Director of Vocational School of Justice, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), said that termination and evacuation would not be requested due to the fact that the rental fee is not paid in the workplace rents until June 30, but that would only prevent the termination and evacuation until that date.
