Çağdaş Yıldırım, IUE Secretary General, and Emre Öztürk, CFO of Vansan Water Technologies, were guests of the series of webinars titled, “Transformation in Tough Times”, co-organized by Izmir Chamber of Commerce (IZTO) and Faculty of Business, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) to support companies in the difficult period caused by the coronavirus. Yıldırım and Öztürk delivered the “Financial Continuity in a Crisis” titled seminar.
“Impact of Covid-19 outbreak on contracts”
Asst. Prof. Cem Özcan, Lecturer at Department of Civil Law, Faculty of Law, and Director of Vocational School of Justice, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), said that termination and evacuation would not be requested due to the fact that the rental fee is not paid in the workplace rents until June 30, but that would only prevent the termination and evacuation until that date.
The kindness campaign receives support from the ‘Mayor’ and the ‘Rector’
Izmir Mayor Tunç Soyer and Rector Prof. Murat Aşkar also joined in the team of students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), who initiated a kindness campaign and carried the “Abla-Ağabey-Kardeş (The Sibling Project)”, which aims to support children living in disadvantaged areas, to online platform. Mayor Soyer and Rector Aşkar, who wanted to give morale to children between 10 and 13 years old and make them feel that they are not alone, sent the short videos they took to the children. The children, who saw Mayor Soyer and Rector Aşkar, were surprised and happy.
Food consumption habits are changing with the pandemic
Department of Sociology Izmir University of Economics (IUE), initiated an “online sociology forum” that discusses Covid - 19 pandemic in various dimensions. Erhan Akarçay from Department of Sociology, Anatolian University, Ecehan Balta from Yerküre Local Studies Scientific Research and Development Cooperative, Yetkin Borlu from American Research Institute in Turkey, Fatma Nil Döner from Istanbul Medeniyet University, and Baran Karsak from Northeastern University attended the “How Our Food Consumption Practices Change with the Pandemic?” titled forum that was moderated byAsst. Prof. Derya Nizam, Lecturer, IUE Department of Sociology.
Paper clothing received an award
Melisa Çeken, student at Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), attracted the attention of the “Stylesight Spotlight” page with a paper dress she created by getting inspired by the rhododendron plant. Officials of “Stylesight Spotlight”, which has 144 thousand followers and gives news about the fashion industry on social media, liked the dress shared by Çeken on her own Instagram account and provided the young designer the opportunity to participate in the Fashion Revolution online certification program and sustainable fashion education in collaboration with Kering Group and London Fashion College.
“Don’t be Bored, I am Here”
Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) did not forget about the old people who have not been able to go out because of coronavirus threat. 44 volunteer students initiated a “Sıkılma Ben Varım (Don’t be Bored, I am Here)” project for people 65 and over in order for them not to feel alone at home and help them have a pleasant time. Students, who are studying at IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design designed games and activities online for the elderly.

Nurseda Toykar, senior at Department of International Trade and Finance, and Zeynep Yazar, senior at Department of Political Science and International Relations also doing a double major at Department of International Trade and Finance of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), have been the guests of Integral Investment Advisor and Economist Dr. Artunç Kocabalkan at Integral ForexTV. Creativity receives ’17 million TL’ support
Izmir University of Economics Creative Economy Research and Application Center’s (IUE+KREA) project, “Create In Izmir”, which aims to make the city the focal point of creativity by producing projects in the field of entrepreneurship and innovation, qualified for approximately 17 million TL (2.3 million Euros) support from the Ministry of Industry and Technology.
Job system in Turkey depends on the state
Prof. Şükrü Özen, Lecturer at Department of Business Administration, has been the last guest of the “Online Seminar Series” organized by the Graduate School as part of the Campus Izmir Talks of Izmir University of Economics. Prof. Özen, who delivered the “Job System in Turkey” titled seminar, stated that said that when viewed from the National Business System, Turkey has the state-dependent business system properties. “State in Turkey can be directly involved in economic activities. We see that the state is a central actor even in the liberal system implemented since the 1980s. As a legislator, regulator, supplier, partner, competitor and customer, we can feel the presence of the state in the market,” Prof. Özen.
